Lawsuit against USDA's organic livestock rule withdrawal proceeds
The federal court for the Northern District of California issued a decision concluding that a legal challenge to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's withdrawal of organic animal welfare provisions could proceed.

The Organic Livestock & Poultry Practices (OLPP) final rule established production standards including outdoor access was published on Jan. 19, 2017, and was set to become effective on March 20, 2017. Following the change in presidential administration, however, USDA delayed the effective date three times, before finally withdrawing the final rule a year later.

U.S. dairy delegation goes to China, South Korea on trade mission
Leaders from America's dairy industry travel this week to China to promote trade cooperation with official agencies in Beijing and Chinese dairy buyers in Xi'an, China.

In Beijing, a delegation will discuss the flow of Sino/U.S. dairy business amid months of trade tension that has led to tariffs on a long list of U.S. exports, including dairy.

USDA extends comment period on 'Product of USA' labeling
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS) has extended the comment period regarding the petition seeking a change to FSIS guidance policy that currently allows any beef product passing through a U.S. slaughtering or processing plant to bear a "Product of USA" label.

The new deadline for comments is Sept. 17, 2018. However, some groups that support the label change already have voiced support for the petition that FSIS should change current regulations to require that beef be of domestic origin to be eligible for the "Product of the USA" label.

Checkoff-funded centers provide pipeline of future workforce
The National Dairy Foods Research Center program helps drive innovation in dairy products and the latest best practices, thanks to support from the dairy checkoff. Centers in the program, which are located on college campuses across the country, also provide another asset to the industry: a future workforce.

Dr. Vikram Mistry, who heads the dairy and food science department at South Dakota State University (SDSU), said dairy science graduates have little trouble finding employment in one of three majors: dairy production, manufacturing and food science.
