TEACHERS OF THE YEAR
Above, CES kindergarten teacher Jessica Dietsch, left, was named the 2018-2019 Carrollton City Schools Teacher of the Year. Her principal, Kylie Carroll, said Dietsch is an "unsung hero" among teachers because of her quiet - yet very effective - demeanor working with students and their families. Also recognized, from left, were Jennifer Schelp, CJHS Teacher of the Year; Kimberly Cooper, CHS Teacher of the Year; and Allison Akins, CMS Teacher of the Year. Below, Dietsch poses with Board Chairman Dr. Jason Mount, center, Supt. Dr. Mark Albertus, right, and Swede Sullivan of J. Smith Lanier Insurance, the sponsor that supported both a school-level and district-level award.
CES's Dietsch named district Teacher of the Year
A 13-year veteran of Carrollton Elementary School was named the Carrollton City Schools 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting.

The selection of kindergarten teacher Jessica Dietsch was announced following glowing reports school principals gave about their respective TOTYs. The other Teachers of the Year are Allison Akins, CMS; Jennifer Schelp, CJHS; and Kimberly Cooper, CHS.

Last spring, each school announced its school-level representative to serve this year. From that pool of candidates, a district team studied applications and evaluated the teachers in the classroom to decide which one will represent Carrollton City Schools for 2018-2019 and compete for statewide honors.

"We truly believe all of these teachers are exceptional examples of excellence in the classroom, but only one can serve in this system-level role," said Dr. Mark Albertus, superintendent. "Mrs. Dietsch will be a fine representative."

Dr. Albertus also thanked the program sponsors.

"Our community sponsors allow us to make this event even more special," he said. "I'd like to recognize Swede Sullivan, who is in attendance from J. Smith Lanier Insurance, but also Morris Auto Sales, Carrollton Office Equipment, and Ozier Apparel. We appreciate their commitment to our school system and supporting our teachers in this way."

Two CHS students named to state advisory council
Carrollton High School junior Mason Dill and CHS senior Eva Hobson are among 120 Georgia middle and high school students selected to serve on state School Supt. Richard Woods' 2018-2019 Student Advisory Council. This is Eva's second year on the prestigious panel.

Eva, as a seasoned member of the council, said she looks forward to a second year.

"I greatly enjoyed meeting and interacting with the other members of the council because each person was smart and enjoyable," said Eva. "However, last year I had to miss the Georgia General Assembly for unavoidable reasons, and this year, I am looking forward to this experience because politics and policy-making are some of my passions."

Eva is top student who is captain of the school's academic team, a club she has been involved in since fourth grade. She is president of the Spanish Honor Society and a founding member of the CHS Interact Club. But her proudest accomplishment, she says, is being a 2017 alumna of the prestigious Governor's Honors Program.

"GHP taught me to be a world learner, a kind human, and incredibly passionate about everything I do," she said.

Mason is a well-rounded student leader who has served as class president of the student council for the past three consecutive years. He is also a varsity football and lacrosse player and previously was a member of the CHS marching band. He also participates in performing arts activities on campus and in the community.  MORE

Homecoming: "Leading the Way in Service"
There's a lot that is going to happen next week - Dress-Up Days, Spirit Nights, and a buildup to the main event on Friday - Homecoming! CHS will start the celebration with a pep rally for the student body Friday morning and during this event, the announcement of Homecoming King will be made along with recognition of Senior Superlatives for the Class of 2019. The parade will start at 1:00 and is open to the entire Carrollton community. The game against region foe East Paulding is set for 7:30 and at halftime, the Homecoming Court will be recognized and the 2018 Homecoming Queen announced.

Also during the week leading up to Friday Carrollton City Schools administrators will continue the annual tradition of distributing Trojan car decals at each school during morning drop-off. Monday decal distribution will be at CES; Tuesday, CMS; Wednesday, CJHS; and Thursday, CHS. They also will apply the decals for you while you wait for your children to gather their things and exit the vehicle.

Below is a graphic explaining the Dress-Up Days schedule next week. Your one-stop-shop for Homecoming can be found on the CHS website here. And don't forget to support the annual Gold and Black Give Back drive - continuing a decade-long tradition of supporting our community and youth. IT'S GREAT TO BE A CARROLLTON TROJAN!
