Friends,
Thank You!!
As we enter 2019, I want to
share some good news
with you. Due to the generosity of individuals and our congregations we ended the 2018 financial year in the black. While the margin was not large, we did control our spending and receive enough revenue to balance the budget.
Several congregations have already shared that they will be submitting their OCWM gifts on a monthly basis which will ease our cash flow. If your congregation is able to submit funds in this manner, it will assist us. As you know, our revenue needs for 2019, as passed at our Fall 2018 Conference Meeting, increased in order to provide the staff with long-overdue salary increases and to continue our revitalization and development efforts for congregations. We look forward to increased support and services to the congregations and authorized ministers in our conference during 2019.
Two of the ways we are hoping to support the work of the conference more effectively is by utilizing a database system,
Breeze
, an
d a new giving platform
Tithe.ly
. Soon you will hear about how you can update your personal ministerial information on line, rather than submitting a form. Additionally, log in and processing information for
Tithe.ly
which enables individuals and churches to make on line contributions to the conference with much lower service charges will also be provided.
Several events are planned for early 2019 and I want to make you aware of them:
The first is a
gathering for pastors
who wish to explore resources and support for reaching out to youth and young adults. This preliminary conversation is being hosted by our newly formed Youth and Young Adult Ministry Team. The date is
Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at noon at the conference office.
Please contact Barbara Jennings at
barbaraj@pnec.org
to register as we will be serving lunch. The group is limited to 30 participants.
The second is a conversation with
our retired pastors
about the changes in the Manual on Ministry, the new Exempt Standing requirements, and continuing education requirements. This is being hosted by the chairs of the working groups of the Committee on Ministry and will be held on
Tuesday, April 2 at 2 pm at the conference office.
Please contact Patty Rehrig at
pattyr@pnec.org
to register for this event. Light refreshments will be served. The group is limited to 40 participants.
Watch the continuing education calendar
for a variety of opportunities for authorized ministers and church leaders. This calendar is updated frequently.
I hope you will take the opportunity to share with us your hopes, dreams and visions for our conference. We are partners together in ministry and we hope to continue strengthening our partnerships.

A Pastoral Letter: That They May All Be One
January 28, 2019 Written by John Dorhauer
Dear Partners in Christ:
The vision of a body united –in purpose, in mission, in vision – is one that inspired the birth of our denomination. All of our spiritual impulses reverberate in an effort to call us into a more perfect union. Throughout our shared history as a people of faith and as a part of the Body of Christ, we have challenged ourselves to widen the circle of inclusion. Widening the circle has always come with growth pains as we shed old skins and welcome those whom we had previously thought unwelcome. And, with each new articulation of a more fully expressed Body of Christ we have realized new joy. Through it all we remain focused on the call to be one and committed to meeting the challenges inherent in that call.
We are now living in and through a season when the threats to unity are legion. Talk of walls that mark refugees as threats, labels like ‘terrorist’ that attach too easily to Muslims, overt racial bias that normalizes fear and hatred, a pandemic of abuse to women with the trigger reflex to forgive the men who author that abuse have turned America into a land many of us no longer recognize and that too many of us are finding harder and harder to reconcile with our faith.
Now more than ever, the Holy Spirit of the Living God and the Risen Christ is seeking to partner with anyone committed to unifying the human community. The gospel mandate to love our neighbor as we love ourselves resonates deep within us. It calls for the better angels among and within us to always resist impulses to hate, to condemn, to vilify, or to castigate. In such a time as this, the United Church of Christ’s call to fulfill the prayer of Jesus, that they may all be one, stands as an urgent mandate to disciples who envision a just world for all.
United with you in God’s service,
The Rev. Dr. John C. Dorhauer, General Minister and President
You are invited to share this letter with your congregation by reading it from the pulpit or by
downloading
it and providing print copies with your Sunday bulletin.

Summary of PNEC Board Actions
The PNEC Conference Board is committed to sharing information with you. As such they will be sharing summaries of board actions following each bimonthly meeting.
Summary Notes of the December 3, 2018 Conference Board Meeting
Issues Discussed:
- Rev. Dr. Jonathan Lee of the Pension Board of the UCC made a presentation on the United Church Board for Ministerial Support capital campaign currently in progress. They wish to establish a partnership with PNEC to support the funding needs of their financial assistance efforts for clergy and leadership programs for ministers. A partnership will be planned.
- The budget report by Treasurer Christian Creyer indicated that OCWM funding has increased to about the same amount at the same point in 2017. However, we are still more than $100,000 behind the anticipated income for the year. It is hoped an end of year boost in giving will close that gap.
- Committees and ministry teams of the Conference have submitted goals, strategies and purpose statement to the Board. A sub group will be formed early in the calendar year to monitor and offer support for the achievement of these stated goals.
- The Board revisited their own strategic plan to update and add more detailed tasks to the timeline in order to accomplish goals before the Spring Conference meeting in May.
- All Board members received a request letter asking for their personal support of PNEC’s OCWM funding.
Decisions Made / Actions Taken
- As required by the IRS, Bonnie Bates and Christian Creyer submitted the amount of their 2019 compensation that shall be considered as housing allowance. All members present accepted these amounts but, because there was not a quorum present, additional approval votes will be needed by email from Board members for this action to be finalized. (Secretary’s note: More than enough approving votes were received in time for the data to be submitted to the IRS.)
- One of the Working Groups of the Committee on Ministry requested that a summary of Board actions be published for the benefit of all the ministry teams, so they will be aware of decisions made that may affect their work. The Board agreed that a summary of issues and decisions would be compiled after each Board meeting and published in This Week in PNEC.
- Gary Barraco requested that the Board would approve the purchase of another projector and speakers for the convenience of many volunteers who make frequent presentations throughout the Conference, i.e. Gary’s work for 3 Great Loves, Amigos de Guatemala, and many others. The Board approved the expenditure of about $500 from the equipment reserve in the operating budget for this purpose.
Next meeting dates:

Stretching Beyond Video Links - At AM21 we premiered several search committee videos, well-received by Search and Call workshop attendees. These short films, each a few minutes long, tell stories that increase imagination for excellent pastoral leadership. The four videos include “Stretching Beyond Ableism,” “Stretching Beyond Sexism,” “Stretching Beyond Racism,” and “Stretching Beyond Heterosexism.” MESA produced these videos in conjunction with a UCC group of volunteers along with Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training. A public site is now available for you to download or link to the four videos and use with churches:

Reboot Your Worship
Marcia McFee allows you to access the recordings of worship webinars
Worship Design Studio, 524 San Anselmo Ave. #122, San Anselmo, California 94960, (888) 725-5202
--
What an amazing live webinar we had yesterday! If you couldn't join us live,
watch the recording I've posted toward the bottom of the Week 1 page
HERE
. (Or go directly to the video
HERE
)
Don't forget your
E-Valu-ation Question for this Sunday's worship
. Notice at what point the message for the day is introduced. Is it at the beginning so that all parts of the worship can be experienced through that "lens" or does it only come up with the sermon? How integrated with the message are all the elements of the worship so that the entire experience is proclamation of the Word? If elements are not as integrated as you would like, why not? What prevents that?
Next week, our Reboot Basic is about
Congregational Participation
. When people are more actively engaged, they are more likely to remember and live out the message once they leave worship. Watch for that e-mail on Sunday. The idea is for you to take Sunday-Wednesday to go through the materials I've posted and then to join me for the Q&A as a time to follow-up and go deeper. Remember...this is a "Reboot."
Push yourself to take the time to immerse yourself in this guided learning experience.
Get a $20 discount on any of our fully-scripted series for Lent
During the webinar yesterday, I mentioned that we would send you discount codes to get $20 off of any of our fully-scripted Lent series. If you are not yet a full member of the Worship Design Studio, click the links below and use the promo codes to get $20 off of any of the following series:

WEEK 2
In my intro video this week, I introduce the second Reboot Basic:
congregational participation
. When our worship engages the congregation in meaningful ways, the message is brought to life. Symbols play an important role in this.
A reminder about our weekly rhythm: On
Sundays
you will receive an e-mail like this one that leads you to a page full of information to focus on for the week. Watch my video message first and then take the next three days to focus on the materials. On
Tuesdays
, you will receive an affirmation in an e-mail along with a reminder about
Thursday's
live Q&A webinar. On
Fridays
you will get the recording of the webinar and a glimpse at what's coming up the next week.
My prayer this week:
God of Our Ancestors,
for the gift of your presence in all things,
for the gift of your renewing Spirit,
for the gift of the Teacher who walks with us always,
we give you thanks and praise.
Open our eyes,
fill our hearts,
nudge us on the journey.
Amen.

Thanks to those of you who were on live yesterday for the Q&A webinar. If you couldn't join us live,
watch the recording I've posted on the Week 2 page
HERE
or go directly to the video at
https://youtu.be/V09X7E-pTEg
. You won't want to miss it... so many ideas for more participatory worship on many levels!
-- Greetings, Rebooters! And welcome to the
third week
of the 40-day “Reboot Your Worship” experience!
I am excited about this week because we begin to talk about
the work of all the worship artists to make worship sensory-rich
. You will want to forward materials to team members to watch a how-to webinar about their worship art form (music, visuals, media, verbal, dramatic arts). If you don't have a team, these materials are perfect for starting one!
A reminder about our weekly rhythm: On
Sundays
, you will receive an e-mail like this one that leads you to a page full of information to focus on for the week.
Creating God,
we see you through sight, sound, smell and touch.
Open all our senses to your wonder that permeates all things.
Give us passion to use everything we have and are to celebrate you!
Amen!
Your “Reboot Your Worship” journey continues at

If you are into social media, share or tweet this image and/or excerpt from the following paragraph:
I hope you are enjoying the materials on each of the worship arts. As our affirmation says above, the Holy Living God shines through all artists in many ways and the more arts we engage, the more senses we engage and the more the message becomes "M-M-Good" (meaningful and memorable)!
This is your reminder that the Reboot Your Worship
weekly Q&A webinar is on Thursday
. This is your opportunity to learn more and dialogue with me about the Reboot Basic for this week, Lent ideas and other stuff (whatever comes up).
I would LOVE to have your questions ahead of time (
send them
today)! Or if you don't have a question, send in a comment, a thought, or any ideas that you are coming up with for your series. Let's cross-pollinate!
If you cannot be on live Thursday, I will be sending everyone the recording on Friday. The information about the webinar is on your
Week #3 Reboot web page
. And we will send you an e-mail Thursday morning with the information again.

Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley
Community Relations Council (CRC)
CRC Lunch & Learn
On February 7 at 12:15PM, the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown (3231 W. Tilghman St., Allentown PA 18104) will host an event with Jeffrey Ohrenstein, the Trustee and Chairman of the Memorial Scrolls.
The Memorial Scrolls Museum is located at Westminster Synagogue in London. The permanent exhibition, established in 1988, tells the unique story of the arrival from Prague in 1964 of 1,564 Torah Scrolls and of their restoration and distribution to communities throughout the world. The exhibits include some of these Scrolls, a display of remarkable Torah Binders, some of which date from the 18th century, and other moving reminders of the vanished communities of Bohemia and Moravia.
These Czech Torah Scrolls survived the Second World War even as their communities did not. Following restoration, the Scrolls were bestowed to synagogues around the world on permanent loan to link contemporary communities with those that perished under the Nazi regime.
We are fortunate to have five of these scrolls in the Lehigh Valley. Join us as Jeffrey tells the story of these Torah scrolls in our community.
The event is free and open to everyone. To learn more or sign up, contact Aaron Gorodzinsky, 610-821-5500,

Children's Sermon for February 3
(based on Luke 4:21-30)
- by Rev. Dave Quinn
Items needed: hula hoop, adult volunteer with a strong, serrated-edge knife. After kids come up, put the hula-hoop around your waist and tell the kids how much you like your hula hoop. Now, what if someone came up and cut my hula hoop? (Adult volunteer does so) Ask kids how they think you feel about this person cutting your hula hoop---probably you would be pretty mad. But what if they had cut open the hula hoop. so that others could come in to be with me? (Adult volunteer opens gap in hoop and steps inside hoop.) And still others could come in, too. (Invite some of the kids to open the gap in the hoop and step into the circle.) With the cut that has been made, there is now room for more people! Sometimes, people are like this hoop--they make a circle that keeps others out. In today's Bible reading, Jesus is like (adult volunteer's name); Jesus cuts open the circle that people have made, that leaves others out. Jesus reminds us in today's Bible reading that God like to open up the circles people make, to let others in.

Navigating the River of Grief
Our Conference Minister, Bonnie Bates, has published a book which may be used as a resources for pastors and congregations.
CSS Publishing says “When members of the church experience loss, it can be difficult for pastors to discern how best to care for them. What can spiritual leaders expect in the grief process? What are we to do, to say, to journey with those who have experienced loss? What mistakes might we make that do more harm than good?
In Navigating the River of Grief, (ISBN: 0788028855) Rev. Dr. Bonnie Bates shares the results of her important research into the grief process. Her concept of grief as a river is inspired by several biblical references to water, both its ability to threaten and give life. Bates uses case studies to present grief not as the neat linear progression of stages we'd like it to be; rather, it is a river that sweeps the bereaved along in unpredictable ways. Its choppy waters cause pain and its depths are menacing, but when we understand the flow of its current as a spiritual journey we can better help the bereaved navigate toward new life.

has recently been published by Westminster John Knox Press. The book introduces Bible content for both the Old and New Testament. For each biblical book, I provide a summary; content outline; lists of people, places, and key concepts; and important quotations. UCC Center for Progressive Renewal
The UCC’s Center for Progressive Renewal just opened registration for the next cohort of an online leadership development program called the
Convergence Leadership Project
. Author and national faith leader, Brian McLaren, is the director of the program, supported by Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis from Middle Collegiate Church in NY, Diana Butler Bass, Bruce Reyes-Chow, Lindsay Andreolli-Comstock, Jim Keat and others. Living in the age of intersectional movement building, we need leaders and congregations prepared to lead the way. After two years of development, CLP has proven to be a very powerful program for helping congregations make the transition from being “organized churches” to “organizing churches.”
Leaders (lay and ordained) must be nominated, interviewed and accepted into the program. We are looking for congregations with imagination, courage and capacity. Church size or location doesn’t impact the outcome of the experience – it’s more about an openness to change and awareness that a new kind of imagination is needed to move the progressive faith movement forward. We will work with applicants on pricing if that becomes an issue.
