  • Expanded Parking at the CRC for those needing closer parking.
In response to patron feedback, MRD will be adding in 6 new parking spots next to the existing handicap parking that are designated for those needing closer parking.  This will help the situation of all handicap parking being taken on a consistent basis, particularly in the mornings.  These spots are reserved for those needing closer parking so please help the safety of those needing closer parking.  See the sign below in the photo gallery.
  • The Renovation of Holly Park is Nearing!  In addition to a $500,000 Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) grant for the overall project, we are also pursuing a Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant to enable the renovation of Holly Park and the widen Riverbottom Drive. Grant decisions will be announced in early March.  Please see below in the photo gallery to see the site plan for a renovated H olly Park.  The Montrose Rec. Foundation has committed to a $25K local fundraising goal, which we hope to leverage by bringing in the large grants described above.  The MRF has currently raised $12.5K thus far!  If you would like to contribute, you can do so at the CRC front desk or by clicking here to link to information on the Montrose Recreation Foundation.
  • MRD Partner All Points Transit Conducts Transportation Survey.  Please take a minute and help out All Points Transit improve service to the Montrose Community.  Click here to take their survey.
  • Go to the Library, at the same time you visit the CRC!
The Montrose Regional Library District is at the CRC with the Bookmobile, and also with the Bookvan (coming soon!).  The Bookmobile will be at the CRC on early release Wednesdays (from school) on Feb. 13, Mar. 13 and April 10th, from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.  April 10th will be National Bookmobile day.  Free books will be handed out on all of these days and the first several people to visit the Bookmobile will also receive a free CRC day pass.  We want kids to be at the Rec. Center when not at school, on early release days and non-school days.  So, we'll continue adding in more for kids to do on these early release Wednesdays!

MRD News:
The Montrose Community Recreation Center Thanks You!
By Cindy Marino, 50+/Activities Coordinator.

It took 30+ years of trying to get the Montrose Recreation Center built. Plans were made, revised and turned down until April of 2014 when Measure B passed.  Since that time, a flurry of activity has been taking place. The initial plans for the rec center were for a 70,000 square foot facility. Foresight, grant writing, fund-raising and generous donors allowed for the "enhanced plan" to be built. The enhanced plan added 10,000 extra square feet: an extra gym, additional lap lanes in the pool, tripled the walking track by adding the hill and stair courses and supported the addition of the dedicated lease space for Mountain View Therapy. Thanks to the size of the recreation center, we can accommodate a large number of people and host a variety of events, all while avoiding the feeling of crowding. Without the additional space, our offerings would be limited. All parts of the facility are heavily used on a daily basis.

Since our Grand Opening at the end of January 2017, our membership and daily usage has grown rapidly. This month we reached a new milestone of having over 10,000 households in our system. This means that 10,000 households are engaged with MRD in some way, through the Community Recreation Center (CRC), the Field House, the Senior Center or some MRD program. We surpassed our initial goals for CRC annual pass holders by more than triple. People travel from surrounding communities on a regular basis to utilize the facility.

Here we are in 2019, with a state-of-the-art, facility that is unrivaled on the western slope. We want to take this time to thank the community for the support you have given your recreation center. You have made the CRC a hub for community connectedness. With the CRC, people gather, friendships develop and personal goals are met.  Thanks to all the kids who come in after school to take swimming lessons, play team sports and learn sportsmanship through competition. Thanks to all the adults who come in to work-out, use the climbing wall, play racquetball and participate in league sports. Thanks to all the older adults who are using the facility to improve their health through group fitness classes, using the fitness equipment and playing pickleball. I also see all ages using the CRC to rehabilitate from injuries.

We appreciate you embracing the CRC by fully utilizing it! In response to survey feedback, we expanded our hours, opening earlier 6 days per week. Beginning in January, the CRC is now open at 5:30 a.m. Monday - Friday to better serve those who want to work out early. We are open an hour earlier on Sundays, 11:00 am, to give extra time in the rec center on the weekends.  Our hours are now 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. M-F, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
We are also expanding our scholarship program to include scholarships for not just youth, but now also seniors as well. The scholarship pays for half of the fee of the activity you want to participate in. There is a maximum of $50 per person per year available in the scholarship funding for both youth and seniors. If you qualify for some form of assistance such as food stamps, low income senior housing, free/reduced lunch, Medicaid, LEAP, etc., you qualify for the MRD Scholarship. We invite you to check out the CRC if you haven't already. You will likely meet new friends, improve your health and have a lot of fun! It is a great way to start the year off right! Here's to another great year of recreating in Montrose.

Cindy Marino, 50+/Activities Coordinator. Cindy has been serving the community through MRD for 10 years.

Have your running gait assessed before spring and summer races?

Racing season is just around the corner and MRD offers running gait analysis to help you get ready. Whether you are an aspiring Fun Run/5k runner or a dedicated ultramarathoner, running gait analysis can help reveal ways you can improve your form and gait and help increase your running efficiency. If you have nagging running injuries or want to keep injuries at bay during the racing season, running gait analysis can also highlight deficiencies in your stride that may be contributing to those injuries. Analysis is conducted by a physical therapist using video analysis on a treadmill at the Community Recreation Center. To schedule your analysis, please fill out an interest form at the CRC. Happy running!
