A Note from the DEI Office
|
"If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." -African Proverb
The SSW Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Office is always looking for fresh, student perspectives on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Join us in a few upcoming initiatives that promote unity and DEI initiatives.
The Impact of Episodes: Lunch and Discuss is an event series that will feature an episode from a popular, socially aware TV show. Following the viewing of the show students, faculty, and staff attendees are encouraged to engage in a dialogue about the subject matter. The purpose of this event is to bring in outside perspectives of different groups and to create a space outside of the classroom for expression on controversial topics.
In addition to attending events, please nominate a student, staff, or faculty member for the
DEI Impact Award. This award is open to current SSW students, faculty, staff, groups and student organizations, and may be awarded to up to three individuals or groups each Fall. Self-nominations are welcomed. This award seeks to recognize individuals or groups in the School of Social Work who have made significant contributions to advancing diversity, equity & inclusion in the School or in the community.

Arturo S. Rodriguez
President of the United Farm Workers of America
Arturo S. Rodriguez graduated from the U-M School of Social Work in 1973. Rodriguez is continuing to build the union Cesar Chavez founded into a powerful voice for farm workers by increasing its membership and pushing historic legislation on immigration reform and worker rights.
Arturo Rodriguez is leading the United Farm Workers in bringing about meaningful change for farm workers by making it easier for them to organize and negotiate union contracts. Arturo seeks to fundamentally transform agriculture by creating jobs offering workers decent pay, comprehensive health coverage, retirement security, protections against discrimination and sexual harassment. His goal is to preserve the U.S. food supply through a strong and viable agricultural industry.
Arturo also worked closely with President Obama, over the President's executive order on immigration issued in November 2014.
