Jazz at the Rowley Library - American Songbook Classics, Saturday, February 9, 1pm

Presented by the Dirty Martinis, featuring vocalist Les Sampou and pianist Ed Grenga, this extraordinary vocal and jazz piano duo brings a unique and sultry take on the classic renditions of such great singers as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. Their performance will be fun, stylish and crowd pleasing for all. Treats will be served at this free event! This program is supported in part by a grant from the Rowley Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

The Rowley Public Library is once again teaming up with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, Massachusetts Library System, Boston Bruins, Cradles to Crayons, and The Wonderfund, a partner of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, to collect pajamas for children in need!

The Rowley Library Staff and Trustees are looking for feedback from the community as they update their Strategic Plan. Please encourage everyone in your household to complete the survey, either online or on paper. You may get a hard copy at the Library, or look for it in your February light bill. Even if you are not regular library users, your opinions matter and we want to hear from you!

Board of Library Trustees opportunities

Do you want to become more involved with the Library and the Town? Consider running for the Board of Library Trustees! There will be vacancies for 1, 2, and 3 year terms at the May 14 Town Election. WHAT IS WINTER BLUES?
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression caused by the change in seasons, and it is more common than most people realize. People also refer to it as "winter blues" or "winter depression."

At one extreme, are people with SAD who really struggle through the change of seasons. At the other extreme, are those who wake up cheerfully rain or shine. And in between, are those with winter blues who don't feel fully themselves during the fall or winter. They can still function well enough day to day, but the darker months are more challenging for them than other months. For many, 30 minutes a day with the light therapy lamp can improve mood and outlook during the darkest days of the year.

of the Friends of the Rowley Library

Please look for our Annual Rowley Library Friends Membership Drive mailer in early April. We hope we can count on your support to renew your membership again. All membership proceeds go straight to support programming for all at our library.

Start looking through your book collection for your reading treasures you can donate to our library. Please mark your calendar for our two donation days March 30th and April 27th from 9:00am - 12:00pm. Our annual book sale is scheduled for May 4th and 5th with preview night (Friends members only) Friday, May 3rd. We will also need lots of volunteers again to sort and sell books. Please ask friends and family to help. An invitation will go out mid February.

The Friends will soon send out a survey to get an early indication of volunteers we can count on for the potential 14th Friends of the Rowley Library Chili Cookoff. 40 volunteers are needed to put together and run this big and fun community event to be held late September/early October of 2019. Please talk to your friends and family and help us garner support. Without a huge pool of volunteers we are not able to put on this event.

The Friends of the Rowley Library thank fellow Library Friend Michelle Ford for again running a very successful Holiday Basket Raffle this last December. You are just awesome Michelle. Thank you.

The art of Tina Gagnon on exhibit

The Rowley Public Library is currently hosting the work of Tina Gagnon.
The medium of colored pencils allows for fine detail, allowing her to express a high degree of realism that recreates her subjects just as they are in life.
Her drawings can be categorized as Nature: botanicals & animals and Nostalgia: pieces that trigger a memory of your past when you merely glimpse at it. The display will be up through February.

Valentines in our Display Case

Local resident Elizabeth Hicken will be sharing her collection of Valentines cards with us just in time for the holiday! Stop by to see these beautiful examples of paper art, on display through February. If you have an interesting collection or hobby and would like to put a display in the case to share it with the community call Amy Roderick at 978-948-2850

Museum Passes offered for discounted admission

Call early for school vacation week reservations!

Passes providing discounted admission are available for the New England Aquarium (Sept - June only), Museum of Science, Museum of Fine Arts, Peabody Essex Museum, Children's Museum Boston, Wenham Museum, Zoo New England , the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum and the State Parks Parking Pass. Passes are sponsored by the Friends of the Rowley Public Library with support from the Rowley Cultural Council and one anonymous donor. Rowley Book Club to meet Thursday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m.

Join the Rowley Library Book Club for a discussion of Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. A brilliant retelling of Homer's classic tale, the Iliad, it's an action-packed adventure filled with legendary heroes and an epic love story, as young Prince Patroclus follows his friend Achilles into war, little knowing what the future holds.

Knitting Group, Tuesdays, 6:30- 8 pm

Bring your latest project and join us. This is not a class but we will all help each other.

Yoga with Elissa, Wednesdays, 5:30-7 pm

Elissa Shoreman, founder and owner of Buddhaful Souls Yoga Studio teaches this class, which is appropriate for all fitness levels, modifications are made for beginners and challenges introduced for more experienced students. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat if you have one. Asana practice can increase flexibility, strength and balance, and help to focus the mind while expanding the spirit. Classes are $12 each or $10 for members of the Friends of the Rowley Library. No registration required. Questions call 978-948-2850

Genealogy Club meets on Monday February 11, 6-8 pm

Interested in researching your family history? Start with yourself! Join us from 6-8 pm on the second Monday of each month in the Local History Room for Genealogy Club, where like-minded researchers can make use of the Library's resources, share ideas, and make progress on family stories. No experience necessary. No expert on hand, but those who have been working on this for a while will help you get started. Databases available are Ancestry.com (in library only) and Heritage Quest (access remotely with your Rowley Library bar code).

Wi-Fi hotspots available for check out

The Rowley Public Library has two Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspots available to loan, which will give up to 15 Wi-Fi-enabled devices simultaneous access to your own secure, private Internet signal. Borrow them like you would any library materials for one week, and take a signal with you almost anywhere. Call 978-948-2850 for more information or to make a reservation.

Tired of never finding that popular book on the shelf? Check out our new collection of Hot Titles, recent bestsellers in high demand, just waiting for someone to check them out! These popular items circulate for a three week loan period, but they are not holdable and may not be renewed. Check the spinner often - it might be your lucky day!
