PTSA Newsletter for the week of Oct. 21, 2018

Local Business Support

Thank you to Nemours Children's Health System for all they have been doing in direct support of our PTSA this year!

Lake Nona Middle School

This past week concluded the first full school week of the second nine-week marking period. This week will be only a four-day school week for students as there is no school on Friday, October 26th. Please note that we will be releasing report cards for the first nine weeks on Monday, October 29th.

Here early in the second quarter I would like to remind our community about our PTSA. This fiercely dedicated group of volunteers are essential to a number of special programs throughout the school year that benefit our students and their teachers. In this issue you will find a request for assistance with the Annual Halloween Dance/Haunted House and a special opportunity at dinner offered but once per year. Kindly know that the personal time or funds donated to efforts like these 100% benefit our students. If you have the opportunity this week, or perhaps in the future, to lend a little support to our PTSA it would mean a great deal. You see, we rely on community involvement like this to help inspire our young Knights and their teachers who give it their best every day. Thank you for your consideration.

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight Vital Signs

Making sense of the chart: The lines represent the total number of students tardy both to school (blue) and between classes (orange). Unfortunately last week both types increased +18% from prior week. There are two major issues with tardies: 1) they represent lost in-class instructional time which cannot be recovered; and 2) students that walk in late disrupt the lesson at hand. Knights, please make every effort to arrive on time! Thank you.

Knight of Music and Pancakes

The LNMS bands provided music while families and friends enjoyed a dinner of pancakes and sausage cooked up by the supporting LNHS band members. This annual event was held October 10th in the LNMS cafeteria with performances by students of the band and LNHS students flipping "homemade" pancakes for the crowd. The Lake Nona High School band director, Monica Leimer, also entertained between performances with  jokes of a musical flare. We would like to thank her for supporting our band program.

Career Education with Mrs. Colon
Mrs. Colon's 6th graders have been working on an oil spill cleanup problem after researching historical major oil spills. The students had to build their own model of an ocean and then simulate a spill using different methods of cleanup.

The problem Mrs. Colon's students had to solve:

"Slippery Shores Oil Spill Cleanup"

You and your group are the lead chemical engineers for ExxonMobil, the world's largest publicly traded international oil and gas company. Your CEO just learned that one of your tankers is having mechanical issues and oil is spilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Your CEO asks your crew to come up with a plan to cleanup and collect the oil slick. It is imperative that your crew is able to collect all the oil to be reused or the company will need to pay $200,000,000.00 in fines to the government. Your crew is given a budget of  $20,000,000 to cleanup the oil slick in just 3 days. Your team will discuss the plan and materials you will purchase to clean up your oil slick.

Social Studies with Mr. Johnson
A timeline is a method for picturing time. A timeline shows the chronology of a specific span of time so students can see relationships between events.  Mr. Johnson created a timeline (below) for the students to better understand and visually see key events from the American Revolutionary War.
