House of Prayer
is a gathering of God's people who value:
Welcoming,
Openness,
Compassionate Community,
and Relationships

Here is an update of what is happening at
House of Prayer this week!
Worship This Sunday
Then he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' And you will say, 'Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.'" Luke 4:21-23

When Jesus completed his scripture reading and sermon at his hometown synagogue, the response escalated quickly. At first, the people were amazed at how well he spoke, but as they reflected on his words, they turned on him. Rather than receiving Jesus' words as good news (he let them know the Messiah had come) they disparaged him for being the son of a mere carpenter. The gospel text continues with Jesus reminding them of how God blessed outsiders when the people of Israel's hearts were cold and inward. Join us Sunday as we explore this theme of human rejection and God's acceptance.
Call Committee Update
It is with great joy and excitement that the Call Committee announces that it has unanimously recommended Kelly Sandin for a ¾ time call to the Leadership Ministry Team (LMT); and that the LMT subsequently gave their unanimous approval to this candidate for call as the next Associate Pastor at House of Prayer.
Please mark your calendar for Sunday, February 17, 2019, and plan on attending a Congregational Meeting to be held in the sanctuary immediately after the 9:30 worship service that morning. At this meeting, the congregation will vote on extending a formal call. We look forward to the congregation sharing the enthusiasm of HOP's Leadership, Call Committee, and Human Resources Team as we move into our next chapter.
Please join us on February 17th with open hearts and minds! Direct any questions to Scott Wright, Brent King, Monica Dorow, Jon Lankey, Karen Amezcua, or Tom Haffely, the call committee members.
From Intern Pastor Deanna
January was my month for consecutive weekends at House of Prayer. Thank you for your continued support and graciousness. I will rotate to another Collaboration church for weekends in February. Of special note was your help on January 20. Many thanks to those of you who were able to come to worship and provide sermon feedback for me. I preached on the 2nd Sunday of Epiphany. I intended to open your hearts, minds and ears to an imaginative reading of the wedding at Cana. I prayed that you would participate in my storytelling and have some sort of encounter with Jesus in the process. Well, the joke was on me! You overwhelmed me with over 50 written feedback forms and even more verbal thoughts. I learned a tremendous amount in the preaching preparation, delivery, and feedback process. It feels providential that this epiphany encounter moved me more than the people I planned to serve.
Sunday School Children Sing This Sunday
The children from both Sunday School classes will sing as part of FEAST worship this Sunday (2/3) at 11am. We invite everyone to come join us to worship with them! Parents, please reach out to Mindy Mennicke with any questions ([email protected]).
Attention Communion Servers (Current & Future)
Following the 9:30 service this Sunday (2/3) there will be a very brief training session in the sanctuary. This is for both prospective servers and those who are currently active in that role. We will just go over the basics for those who would like to join this team, and it will be a good refresher for all servers. Please plan to come this week if you didn't attend last week.
Take the Discipleship Challenge
Pastor Ben wrote The Discipleship Challenge several years ago as a way to help people form spiritual habits. The Discipleship Challenge takes place during Lent (Ash Wednesday is March 6) and offers a daily schedule for spiritual discipline that will strengthen your prayer life, broaden your biblical literacy, help you be more generous with your time and money, and deepen your relationship with God and close friends. Sign up on the attendance card or email Pastor Ben at [email protected] if you would like to attend. Copies of the book are available for sale in the church office on Sundays and during the week. The cost of the book is $10 and all proceeds will fund our Lenten mission project through Lutheran World Hunger.

Let's Visit!
Would you like a visitor from one of our pastoral staff members? While we often hear of needs within the congregation, sometimes we are unaware of the needs within our family of faith. Pastor Ben or Minister Kelly would be happy to visit any of our members or friends who would like a pastoral visit. These visits could be health related but could be for any reason. Contact the church office via telephone 612-866-8471 or Pastor Ben via email [email protected].
