The Calvary Connection
September 2018
“You can be whatever you dream to be, all you have to do is reach and pray and give
everything you have inside of you.” - Betty, former resident at Calvary
Betty's Journey to Independence
Betty was desperate to make a change. Her husband had begun using drugs. He had also become abusive.  She decided she had to get away . Betty gathered her courage, and her belongings, and moved out.

For the next few months she bounced around the homes of various family members and friends. The instability and chaotic nature of her life – not knowing how long she could stay in one place, not sure where the next place would be – began to take a heavy toll.

Betty had heard enough stories about the shelters around town to know that they were not the kind of place she wanted to end up. Finally, one of her friends recommended Calvary's housing program .

Betty wasn’t sure how it could be any different from a shelter, but she quickly learned the many ways that set Calvary’s housing program apart. Get the full story of Betty's journey to independence on our website.

Volunteer Spotlight: Joelle Rudney
Joelle Rudney has been a cornerstone of our education program since she began volunteering at Calvary. Earlier this year she received the Legacy Volunteer Award for dedication and service during our 17th annual Hope Awards Dinner . Although she has taught many topics, the most popular have been Spanish, Art Appreciation, and Writing Skills.

To get the perspective of both facilitator and participant, we sat down with Joelle and a frequent student in her classes, Nakia. Read this fun interview in our latest blog post.

If you are interested, or know someone who might be, contact Sandrine Uwera for more information on how to get started.

Corporate Connections

You can help Calvary connect to new supporters and friends!  Currently, we're looking to connect with the following companies:

  • American Airlines
  • CareFirst
  • Kaiser Permanente
Do you have a connection to one of these companies, and would you be willing to help bring them into the Calvary community? If so, please send a quick note to  Lisa Buchs  to let us know. We will do the work, we just need your help making the connection! Thank you in advance for connecting Calvary with potential supporters who can help us end homelessness in Washington, DC.
