House votes to repeal medical device tax

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 283-132 this week to repeal the 2.3% tax levied upon medical devices as part of the Affordable Care Act.

The tax has directly impacted several local medical device manufacturers in the region including AngioDynamics, BD (formerly CR Bard), and others. Rep. Elise Stefanik was a co-signer on the House repeal bill. The bill now heads to the US Senate where New York Senator Chuck Schumer was instrumental two years ago in having the tax suspended.

JUST Water CEO Jim Siplon and Hyde Collection Interim Director Anne Saile came up with a creative way to incorporate the water company's recycled materials in a competition that featured local business teams in the annual Art Battle.

CEG indicates gains in Capital Region manufacturing employment, including Glens Falls region

Employment in the Capital Region's manufacturing sector last year climbed to its highest level since 2001. In 2017, the eight-county region's manufacturers drove a 1.6 percent annual net jobs gain to an annual average of 34,322. Employment was up 7.6 percent from five years earlier, according to a Center for Economic Growth (CEG) analysis.
