Recordkeeping Done Right
Utilizing Outreach Training Resources
Did you know that the OSHA Training Institute Education Center has a webpage featuring instructions on exactly how to keep your records for 10- and 30-hour classes? Following our guidelines will essentially guarantee that you pass a records audit!

As mentioned in a previous newsletter, there are several reasons an outreach trainer may be audited, including:

  • Being a new trainer
  • Having discrepancies on card requests
  • Complaints
  • Being chosen at random

We want you to succeed as an outreach trainer, which is why we’ve created this helpful resource page .
Our Outreach Program Training Resources page not only has direct links to OSHA’s outreach trainer procedures manuals but also has helpful “cheat sheets” on recordkeeping requirements and minimum topic length requirements. We also have a sample daily roster (works as a blank template – free for you to use now) and two different examples of acceptable topic agendas

We hope you find these resources helpful!
OSHA Requires Minimum and Maximum
Outreach Training Class Sizes
Some outreach trainers may not be aware that OSHA requires a minimum and maximum number of students for 10-hour and 30-hour outreach classes. Completion card requests and audits have indicated that some outreach trainers have conducted classes with only 1-2 students while other trainers have led classes with 50 or more students.

According to the OSHA Outreach Training Program requirements, the minimum size for any 10-hour or 30-hour class is 3 students, while the maximum size is 40 students.
Maximum Class Size: 40 Students
Minimum Class Size: 3 Students
“OSHA intends for OSHA Outreach Training Program training to be participatory. For this reason, OSHA requires … at least 3 students per class…”

Exceptions to these requirements can be made, but the request must be in writing, and we must receive the request at least 7 days in advance of the class.

“A separate request must be submitted for each class for which an exception is sought, and only one exception will be permitted, and in effect at a time.”
Please refer to pages 15 and 16 of the Outreach Training Program Requirements . If you have any questions or need further assistance, contact Addie Hosier at 925-249-9374 or ahosier@clpccd.org

OSHA Outreach Training Program

The OSHA Outreach Training Program was established to train workers in the basics of safety and health hazard recognition and prevention. OSHA authorizes trainers who complete the 4-day construction or general industry train-the-trainer courses to conduct 10-hour and 30-hour construction or general industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention courses.

Outreach Trainer Portal

Outreach Training Card requests are now processed through an online database system. Outreach Training Cards have better fraud protection and include a QR code to allow employers and workers to verify the authenticity of the card. All trainers must register in the Outreach Trainer Portal in order to submit OSHA Outreach Training Reports.
