News for Faculty and Staff from Human Resources
Dear Staff and Faculty,

Paul Fauerso Returns to Fairfield with his Iconic 60s band—The Loading Zone—at Sondheim Saturday, October 27

Discounted Tickets Available for Faculty & Staff

At the heart of the legendary San Francisco music scene of the late 60's was The Fillmore—that amazing venue where those with "flowers in their hair" convened to hear The Who, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead.  And the house band that shared the stage with them all was The Loading Zone—formed by our own Paul Fauerso.

Now The Fillmore returns to the heartland when Paul Fauerso brings his iconic 60s band back to Fairfield for a one-night comeback tour this Saturday, October 27 at “Fillmore Central”--the Sondheim.

Health and Wellness
A Neurologist Explains the Benefits of TM
I'm a neurologist and practice at "Pro Health" in New York, and I'm a clinical associate professor of neurology at New York University school of medicine. I've been practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique since I was a freshman in college and I noticed from the first meditation, whether I was trying or not trying, just naturally, a calmness, a kind of peace came over my mind and a sense of relief and a real quietness in the physiology as well.

Question: What are the mechanics of Transcendental Meditation?

Answer: Well we know that the mind and body are intimately connected. With Transcendental Meditation we have a mental technique, a very simple, effortless, natural mental technique. We experience a thought on quieter and quieter levels of the mind in a very natural and spontaneous way.

Question: What changes take place on the level of the physiology?

Answer: What's happening, since the mind and body are intimately related, physiologically we have a profound change. The physiology starts to gain a type of rest that is different and, in some ways, much more profound than the kind of rest that it gets during deep sleep or during dreaming. So the body enjoys this unique profound rest while the mind expands and settles down and gains this heightened alertness. This is what scientists would call a wakeful hypo-metabolic state. In other words, a state of restful alertness. You naturally and easily maintain this state of restful alertness during the Transcendental Meditation technique.

Speaker: Gary P. Kaplan, M.D., Ph.D., Neurologist, associate professor of clinical neurology at Hofstra University School of Medicine

Please Remove all Boxes from Hallways and Common Areas
The Housing Department has been conducting inspections of all buildings on a regular basis so we can keep up with any and all repairs and cleaning that needs to be done.

We have noticed that several buildings have many extra items and boxes in the hallways that are a fire hazard. In speaking with our maintenance crew the fire code states that all items must be 36” away from electrical breaker boxes on all sides-right, left and in front.

Please remove all boxes from hallways and common areas as this too is a fire hazard. Beginning in November we will go building by building and see if compliance has been achieved. If not those items will be removed and disposed of. We need to get all our buildings cleaned up and up to fire code standards.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

TM in the News
No one can accuse Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner of having too little on their plate.

Perhaps the Jewish power couple can juggle so much is partially due to their dedication to transcendental meditation. The Daily Beast recently published a  feature story  on the benefits of the technique, which purports to help practitioners control anxiety, increase health — and even end war and help people fly. The First Family members may be two of its most famous adherents.

Transcendental meditation has attracted a number of celebrities, and Trump and Kushner are often listed top among them. They were spotted at the David Lynch Foundation’s gala for transcendental meditation last year, along with stars such as Jerry Seinfeld, Margaret Cho and Kesha. Tom Hanks is also a member of the organization,  according to  Business Insider.

Center sees professionals embracing Transcendental Meditation
When  Transcend, Palm Beach  opened in April 2017, many residents were already practicing transcendental meditation. But since then the center has attracted new fans trying to de-stress from their professional and personal lives.

About 150 people have come to the center at Palm Beach Towers at 44 Cocoanut Row over the last year, the directors say, 80 percent are residents who often use transcendental meditation to give them an edge in the business world.

“Palm Beach people are responding,” said Elaine Pomfrey, a co-director and a transcendental meditation teacher. “They know that stress is an important thing and they just want more out of life. It’s natural to want to expand your capabilities.”

A 2012 review published by the American Psychological Association credited transcendental meditation with reducing anxiety and boosting memory.

It has “popped into the mainstream,”  Business Insider reported in 2016 , noting that 2,500 professionals picked up the technique from 2013-2016 and that 55 percent of them worked on Wall Street.
