SEPTEMBER FALL FOOD DRIVE WAS A SUCCESS!
Our FALL FOOD DRIVE on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Food Lion stores in Amherst and Madison Heights collected over 2,500 lbs of food items and $341 in cash donations.

NHN would like to thank our volunteers, county residents who contributed, the Amherst and Madison Heights Food Lion stores, and most of all our God Who makes all things possible.

There is still time to donate on our website, click the link www.nhnamherst.org.
Thank you to our volunteers who talked to shoppers, passed out shopping lists, and loaded food items.

Thank you to the Kids at Caterpillar Clubhouse for separating the cans from the Food Drive. They managed to empty three of the five "watermelon crate" size boxes!
Amherst Kitchen @ Ascension would like to thank the Women's Group of Randolph Baptist located on Rt. 29 for providing the meal on Thursday, September 13, 2018. Our guests enjoyed homemade vegetable soup, hot dogs with all the fixings, and homemade pies and cakes for dessert.

If your church would like to sponsor a meal for our kitchens as a service project, please contact NHN.
Madison Heights Kitchen @ MHBC would like to thank Madison Heights Baptist Church for the fresh garden salad and an assortment of homemade desserts on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, following their church's pasta meal night.

In addition, the Amherst County Sheriff's Department has donated spaghetti sauce from the Monday luncheon at the Sheriff's Department to the Food Kitchens for future meals.

If your organization has a volume of leftovers following an event, please contact NHN and we will be happy to arrange a pick up.

When metrics say "thanks" with a hug.
woman_hand_butterflies.jpg
This past Saturday, September 15, 2018, the Food Pantry served 95 shoppers. CEO, Garry Friend shared an example of how the metrics of measuring the success of NHN's mission are not always found on paper. The testimony also underscores Garry's characteristic tagline, "it's not just about the food!"

During the morning, a "former shopper" stopped by to say, 'thank you for being here when I needed help.' He no longer needed to shop at the pantry because he had a job now. Then he reached into his pocket to give Garry a donation, tearfully offering a brotherly hug, and thanking God for the NHN volunteers and the organization.

The NHN van is now wearing its brand!! Be watching for it as it is out and about for food pick ups!
Volunteer Spotlight
Our focus this month is on a dynamic duo - Jerry and Bonnie Mayberry . Both lifetime residents of Amherst County, Jerry is retired from Areva and Bonnie is a retired Amherst County schoolteacher. Not only do they enjoy fishing and beach adventures, they are actively involved in the lives of their six grandchildren. Many years before their commitment to passionate voluntarism to NHN, they have been actively involved in their church, Madison Heights Baptist Church. Their warmth and energy as they serve the MHBC food kitchen as servers and kitchen workers inspires all their co-volunteers. Thanks for all you do, Bonnie and Jerry!
