Young Washington:  An Evening with Historian Peter Stark 
George Washington is remembered today as a steadfast, mature leader of the American Revolution. But two decades before he led America to independence, Washington was a flailing young soldier serving the British Empire in the vast wilderness of the Ohio Valley. Join author/historian Peter Stark, author of Astoria, to discuss his new book, Young Washington: How Wilderness and War Forged America's Founding Father for a conversation about the early years of America's founding father. Regardless of what you think you know about George Washington, you're guaranteed to walk away enlightened after this fascinating presentation    . . . 
In this series of classes, we will focus on winter holiday designs. Sign up for one (or more) 2-session classes to learn the art of Ukrainian Egg Decorationg (pysanky) to create holiday ornaments.  We will have plenty of white chicken eggs on hand, and all the supplies. If you have access to duck or goose eggs and would like to try your hand at a larger project, feel free to bring them along.

Want to learn more about computers but you're afraid to ask?    Or maybe you've been using a computer for years but want to understand more of the basics.   I n "Computer 101 - Basics" we'll learn online with Universal Class while using our own laptops (the library will also have some laptops to borrow during the class session). Meg Brazill, NWPL's Director of Technology, will guide users and provide in-person info and answer questions.   In 12 lessons.  Sign up required. You will need a library card to access the program. F riends of the NWPL
All members of the community are cordially invited to become members of the Friends of the Norman Williams Public Library. The Friends'  mission is to foster and encourage community support and participation that benefitthe library in its role as a greater Woodstock area cultural, intellectual and educational center. The Friends of the Norman Williams Public Library is an organization that provides a social context to programs, activities and events and devotes itself to the enrichment of the library in every way it can.   To learn more about joining the Friends please attend a meeting on Monday, November 19 at 4pm in the beautiful Reading Room at the library.

Ed Koren, a New Yorker cartoonist for decades, will give us an insight into the quirky, funny, unique vision he has of city folk, rural people, relationships, animals, vegetables and very big fuzzy creatures. He will speak about the ideas and how he gets them, and how he works.  (more)

"Love Your Library" Show
The Mezzanine Gallery at the Norman Williams Public Library (NWPL) invites area artists to participate in a group show celebrating the beauty of our library. 

The "Love Your Library" exhibit will run January 3 - February 15, 2019, to coincide with the Friends of the Norman Williams Public Library's day of activities and "National Love Your Library" month. 

At many libraries around the country, February is dedicated to the people who love the buildings devoted to the reading, housing, organizing, categorizing, finding, studying and otherwise loving books.

What's On Your Nightstand: The Not-A-Book-Club Book Club 
This is NOT the usual book club. We chat about books you are reading, the books you've loved, and the books you've always wanted to read.

Along with great book recommendations, our discussions have ranged from the design and appeal of book jackets, the e-book revolution, which books we reread and why, modern writers, the craft of writing, and the elements of great writing.   We all come away energized and eager for more. Classics Book Discussion Group: 
The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende
The House of the Spirits is a chronicle of three generations of the Trueba family in Chile. The book has been described as an epic that combines the personal and political into "a universal story of love, magic and fate."
NWPL will have copies here and through interlibrary loan. If you would like your own, the Yankee Bookshop will have copies available at a 15% discount for anyone who mentions our book group!        (more info)

Baby & Toddler Story Time

This story time features short stories, interspersed with songs and finger plays and runs for about 20 minutes. It is geared for children ages birth to three years.


Tuesdays, 10:30 - 11:15 a.m.
Preschool Story Time

This session features three thematically-related stories and a tie-in craft or activity. This session runs for about 45 minutes. Geared for children ages 3-5 years.

One Thursday Each Mmonth, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Dorothy's List Book Group
Dorothy's List Book Club meets in the Abbott Room of the Children's Library.

Knicole's Knitting
This is a beginner knitting class. Nicole Charlebois is a fantastic young woman and a wonderful knitter. Classes are free but students do need to provide their own supplies. Our first project will be an infinity scarf. Supplies include 3 balls of chunky yarn and a pair of size 15 (10mm) knitting needles. Please call or stop by the children's circulation desk to register. NWPL Director of Technology Meg Brazill offers one-on-one free tech help to people desiring assistance with their laptops, tablets and mobile devices.
Sign up for a 45-minute time slot on Tuesdays at the Thompson Senior Center by calling them at 457-3277.  Or contact NWPL to sign up for a Wednesday appointment at the library.
Bring your device with you and Meg will work with you to straighten things out and learn about some tools and tricks. J ointly sponsored by the Thompson Senior Center and the Norman Williams Public Library.   (more)

Knitters are invited to meet on the Mezzanine of NWPL every Thursday afternoon. All knitters are welcome - from beginners to experts. Mah Jongg - Weekly
Hello Happy Mah Jongg Players - We have exciting news for you all....  NWPL and The Thompson Senior Center are collaborating again!  There will be Mah Jongg games on Tuesday and Thursday at 2:00 at The Thompson Senior Center for established players. T here will be Mah Jongg lessons on Friday at 1:00 at NWPL.  All players are welcome to attend Friday games, regardless of ability.
