Florida Climate Institute appoints new co-director
FIU Sea Level Solutions Center Director Jayantha Obeysekera has been appointed co-director/chair of the Florida Climate Institute. Obeysekera will lead the institute's report on potential climate change impacts in Florida and adaptation responses. He will also work with state agencies and universities in developing research initiatives. And finally, he hopes to inform efforts to address sea level rise and climate change based on science.
DEP Adaptation Action Initiative (AAI) & Resilent Program Grant (RPG) Request for Applications, FY 2019 (NA19)
The Florida Resilient Coastlines Program (FRCP) has announced the availability of state and federal funds for innovative coastal projects under its RPG (Florida state funds) and AAI (NOAA 309 federal funds) applications for fiscal year 2019-2020. Eligible applicants include Florida's 35 coastal counties and the local governments within their boundaries that are required to include a coastal element in their comprehensive plan. Florida regional planning councils, national estuary programs, colleges, community colleges, and state universities may also apply, as long as an eligible local government agrees to participate as a partner.  Application requirements, instructions, goals and priority areas for each application type (RPG-State; AAI-Federal), and the criteria by which application are scored and recommended, can be found on the FRCP's website at https://floridadep.gov/fco/florida-resilient-coastlines-program/content/funding-opportunities. All applications must be received no later than Noon, ET, Feb. 4, 2019.
Honors, Awards, and Projects
Prof. Ni-Bin Chang, UCF Dept. of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering
Ni-Bin Chang (UCF Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering) has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2018 and was recognized for his contributions to the field of nutrient monitoring, removal, and possible recovery in aquatic environment. Election to NAI Fellow status is a high professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society. Dr. Chang holds nine U.S. patents related to green sorption media for removing nutrients from different urban low impact development facilities, agricultural crop fields, and wastewater treatment plants. All the nine US patents have been licensed to a new company, Environmental Conservation Solutions (ECS), Inc. through the Office of Research and Commercialization at UCF, attracting $20 million industrial investment. These green sorption media products have been marketed and distributed in North America and part of the Europe through the ECS vendors' network. He worked with colleagues in the Stormwater Management Academy to develop over 70 innovative test beds and field applications that can be used to remove nutrients with potential recovery in Florida. Brian Benscoter, Associate Professor, FAU Biological Sciences, was a contributing author of the Terrestrial Wetlands chapter of the Second State of the Carbon Cycle Report (SOCCR2). SOCCR2 represents an important technical contribution to USGCRP's sustained assessment process. The report provides an overview of how human and natural processes are affecting the global and North American carbon cycle, emphasizing advances in the understanding of carbon cycle science and associated human dimensions.
