Dear St. George Families,

Last week I told you a little bit about the ripple effect. This week I wanted to share another experience that I had a number of years ago.

Setting a good example can make a positive difference. This is one of the many lessons we teach at St. George Catholic School. One way in which some describe this message is by calling it the ripple effect. Our hope is that when we lead by example others will follow. Years ago, a friend and I would debate whether or not what we do for others really makes a difference. It didn't take me long to understand where he was coming from. You see, he was a paramedic in Tacoma and the majority of his day was answering calls resulting from violence and selfishness. In contrast, my days revolved around answering God's call to teach and model selflessness. As I tried to convince my friend that helping others is not a lost cause, I used the example of the ripple effect. If you throw a stone into the pond, it makes ripples. Those ripples travel in all directions and the bigger the splash, the more power there is behind that ripple. If we can model kindness, hopefully all who witness this act will, in turn, do the same. This is what we teach because we are all part of the Body of Christ. In the bible Paul says, "Imitate me as I imitate Christ." We are all called to model Jesus. Everyone has the capability of influencing those around them regardless of where they are coming from. Why not make that influence a positive one?

God bless

Jack Nelson
