Domestic violence (also called intimate partner violence (IPV), domestic abuse or relationship abuse) is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship.

Domestic violence does not discriminate. Anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender can be a victim – or perpetrator – of domestic violence. It can happen to people who are married, living together or who are dating. It affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. We know that this subject impacts many of our members in the NASW Virginia Chapter. So, we want to recognize this month with some important resources for you.

Domestic Violence: The NASW Comprehensive Overview - Domestic violence is a preventable problem that regardless of age, economic status, sexual orientation, race, nationality or religion significantly affects individuals, families and communities. Even though both men and women are victimized by domestic violence, women are more likely to experience serious physical, if not lethal violence, in their lifetime.

10 Things Every Social Worker Needs to Know About Domestic Violence -  The implications of domestic violence for social workers are significant; many of the individuals we work with will be or have been affected as primary and secondary victims. Many of our male clients have battered their partners. Many of us have felt the impact of violence in our own families.

Workplace
Social Workers in Higher Education — New Roles, New Opportunities - Changes in America's colleges and universities have created opportunities for social workers to pursue social justice in higher education while addressing the schools' and students' emerging needs. Institutions of higher education today aim to survive in the face of fewer high school graduates and larger numbers of college students who, for many reasons, are at risk of not completing their degrees.
