USDA to realign ERS with OCE, relocate ERS, NIFA
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced further reorganization of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), intended to improve customer service, strengthen offices and programs, and save taxpayer dollars.
The Economic Research Service (ERS), currently under USDA's Research, Education, and Economics mission area, will realign once again with the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) under the Office of the Secretary. Additionally, most employees of ERS and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) will be relocated outside of the National Capital Region. The movement of the employees outside of Washington, DC is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

Health traits included in Net Merit $
With the August U.S. dairy genetic evaluations, Net Merit $ and the other lifetime profit indices have been revised to factor in disease resistance and to update the economic values used in calculations. Net Merit (NM$), Cheese Merit (CM$), Fluid Merit (FM$) and Grazing Merit (GM$) were revised for the triannual genetic evaluations released August 7 by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB).
"It is exciting to incorporate these direct measures of disease resistance, so that Net Merit continues to evolve and provide the most relevant information for dairy producers as they work to breed and manage healthy, productive herds," said João Dürr, CDCB chief executive officer.
In April 2018, evaluations for genetic resistance to six health disorders were launched by CDCB. For Holstein males and females, genetic and genomic evaluations then became available for six common and costly health events - Displaced Abomasum (DA), Hypocalcemia (MFEV), Ketosis (KETO), Mastitis (MAST), Metritis (METR) and Retained Placenta (RETP).

Two dairy processing plants to call Michigan home
Two new world-class dairy processing facilities are expected to dramatically improve the production, profitability and long-term prospects for Michigan's struggling dairy farmers. In 2017, depressed milk prices caused milk producers in the state to lose $164 million as a result of an oversupply of milk and high transportation costs due to the current lack of milk processing facilities in the state.
Glanbia PLC, a global nutrition group with a presence in 32 countries, has partnered with Select Milk Producers Inc. and Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) to form Spartan Michigan LLC, which will develop a $425 million, 146-acre dairy processing facility in St. Johns, Mich. The new facility will process more than 8 million lb. of milk per day and is expected to create 259 new jobs.

Milk from bulk storage tanks could be used for FMD testing
Researchers at The Pirbright Institute in the U.K., in collaboration with partners at the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service's Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory on Plum Island, N.Y., have shown that foot and mouth disease (FMD) virus can be detected in milk samples using a method that is potentially sensitive enough to identify the virus in pooled milk stored in bulk tanks or milk tankers.
According to the announcement, these results indicate that testing milk samples could contribute to disease surveillance both during and after outbreaks.
