Floor-to-Ceiling Cabinets are a Trend Worth Considering
Kitchen cabinets are one of the primary focal points of any kitchen design. Today there are many options and decisions you need to make when choosing the perfect cabinets for your new kitchen. However, one question is pretty straight forward... Should your cabinets go to the ceiling? We have seen in recent years a growing trend for homeowners and designers to run their kitchen cabinets floor-to-ceiling. It can be a bold design choice that can work both in historical period design as well as in more modern kitchen styles.

Let's take a look at the advantages of using floor to ceiling kitchen cabinets in your kitchen and the factors you should consider when making your decision.

The Benefits of Floor to Ceiling Cabinets
Today, many homeowners are choosing to devote an entire wall in the kitchen to floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. If you have enough counter space, this can be a great way to build a lot of storage into the kitchen. Dedicating a wall to storage can mean a more open kitchen as you can eliminate upper cabinets in other areas. Adding glass front cabinets over the uppers to the ceiling can serve as a beautiful, artistic way to display your treasured items like special china, glassware, or art glass collection. Ceiling height cabinetry is a modern, high-end look that is not only aesthetically beautiful, but it's also incredibly functional.
Four Factors To Consider When Choosing Kitchen Cabinets
If you're not sure if floor to ceiling cabinetry is right for you, there are four factors to consider when making your decision.

Design Preference
The design should be your first consideration. Do you like the smooth continuous look offered by cabinets that run floor to ceiling? Some homeowners love the look of a continuous wall of cabinets with no space above them. Others prefer their functionality. Continuous cabinetry offers more storage space and eliminates dead space on top of cabinets that can collect dust. It's important to be aware that the upper shelves may not be very accessible. However, many homeowners use these high shelves to store seasonal items like dishes or serving platters that are rarely used.

Ceiling Height
Ceiling height is another factor to consider. Many kitchens have ceilings that are 8 or 9 feet high. If yours falls into this category, you have a few options. Most stock and semi-custom manufacturers offer wall cabinets in heights of 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, 36, and 42 inches. Depending on your budget, you can fill the space either by buying cabinets that precisely fill the area or by running two rows of wall cabinets that occupy the entire space. If you are installing semi-custom or custom cabinetry, this is less of an issue than if you choose to use stock cabinetry.

If you have 10-foot ceilings, custom cabinetry may be the most straightforward practical solution for filling the space. If your ceiling is higher than 10 feet, it may not be practical or attractive to run floor to ceiling cabinetry at this height.
Ceiling Details
If you have architectural details, such as beams or a coffered ceiling this can be challenging when planning floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. With beams, whether they offer structural support or are decorative, it's best to keep the top of the cabinets below the ceiling for a clean look.

Other architectural details can complicate your design. For example, if you have a historic home, or your kitchen features ornate crown molding, you'll probably need to remove it before installing cabinetry to the ceiling. It may also be impossible to re-attach the molding. You'll need to decide which feature is more visually appealing and fits into your design better, the cabinetry, or the molding.

Another architectural feature that can complicate things is a coffered ceiling. A coffered ceiling relies on a symmetrical look that is disrupted as soon as you extend cabinetry from floor-to-ceiling. With a standard height cabinet, you also have the option of using indirect uplighting to highlight architectural elements. This option is lost when you install floor to ceiling cabinetry.

Budget
Finally, budget is a factor you need to consider. Kitchen cabinetry is already the most expensive element of a kitchen remodel, and floor-to-ceiling cabinets mean substantially higher remodeling costs. Whether you're buying extra tall custom cabinetry, or adding a second row of cabinets, more material means a higher price.

If you're set on including floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, but budget is a concern, you could extend the ceiling down to the top of the cabinets. By framing and finishing soffits that drop down to the ceiling height to meet the top of the cabinetry, you can add an interesting visual element to your design, while still creating the look of floor to ceiling cabinetry.

The Bottom Line On Floor To Ceiling Cabinets
When it comes to cabinetry, there really is no right or wrong height for your cabinets. It all comes down to personal preference. Making the right decision requires considering your overall renovation budget, the space you have available, your own style, and your functional needs. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry can be functionally and aesthetically stunning. If you have tall ceilings and want to draw attention to the height, floor-to-ceiling cabinets are a great design choice. Work with your CHW kitchen designer to achieve your creative vision and the functionality you need.

This Month's Feature Recipe
The Best Grilled Pizza
Everything you need to know about how to cook pizza on the grill! This is seriously the best, easy grilled pizza you'll ever make without a pizza stone. It's chewy, crispy, and perfect for adding your favorite toppings... including those fresh from your summer gardens!
Ingredients
  • Parchment paper
  • Olive oil, for drizzling
  • 1 lb pizza dough (homemade or store bought at room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce or thinly sliced fresh tomatoes
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced into 1/8 inch thick rounds
  • 6-8 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons grated or shredded parmesan cheese

Instructions
  1. Preheat your grill to 425 degrees F, and then scrape off any bits with a grill brush that were left behind when you last grilled.
  2. Place parchment paper on a hard surface and spread olive oil onto parchment paper using your hands.
  3. Add your room temperature pizza dough onto the parchment paper, and stretch it out into a rectangle or circle until the dough no longer pulls back.
  4. Transfer your pizza dough to your grill by taking your parchment paper and flipping it upside down so that the dough lands safely on top of the grates. Then, peel your parchment paper off of the dough.
  5. Close the lid of your grill and let your pizza cook for 2-3 minutes until it's golden brown on the bottom. The pizza may produce some bubbles on the top, but those will settle once you flip.
  6. After 2-3 minutes carefully check the underside of the dough using tongs. If the bottom is golden brown, use your tongs to flip your pizza.
  7. Quickly and carefully top your pizza with tomato sauce or fresh tomatoes, mozzarella slices, and basil leaves (or whatever toppings you are using).
  8. Close the lid of your grill and allow the pizza to cook for 2-3 minutes more until the cheese is melted and the underside is golden brown.
  9. Once the cheese is melted and the underside of your pizza is golden brown, slide your pizza onto a cutting board with your tongs.
  10. Allow pizza to cool for 5-10 minutes before cutting. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese, cut into 16 slices, and serve.
