ABI Election Update
All the info you need about the upcoming election on November 6.

Employee Voter Registration Week is ONE Week Away
With the 2018 election approaching fast, it's important employers take the time and opportunity to educate their employees on how critical it is they vote in the upcoming election. Voting is the most powerful tool a citizen can use to have their voice heard. Surveys and polls have shown employees are more likely to be engaged in the civic process of voting if encouraged by their employer. ABI is proud to participate in Employee Voter Registration Week and encourages your company to do the same. Employee Voter Registration Week takes place September 24-28. ABI's grassroots website, IAVotes.comcontains tools and information you can use to learn more about key business issues, where candidates stand on those issues and how you and your employees can be engaged in the political process.
ICYMI: Friends of Iowa Business Endorsements Unveiled
On September 4, the IIPAC Board of Directors announced the Friends of Iowa Business endorsements for the 2018 election. The IIPAC Board takes several factors into account when deciding on whether to endorse a candidate, which may include reviewing a candidate's voting record if he or she is an incumbent official, public statements the candidate has made on business issues, voter registration totals of the candidate's district, the competitiveness of the race and input from ABI and IIPAC members. Click here to review the list of candidates who received a Friend of Iowa Business endorsement.  Click here to see how Iowa lawmakers voted on key business legislation.
Financially Support Friends of Iowa Business
The IIPAC-endorsed list of pro-business candidates have been announced, but this election is far from over! We need your help to support the individuals who have been endorsed as Friends of Iowa Business. These candidates, chosen because they have a record of supporting jobs and economic growth, need your support right now .

There are less than 60 days left until the election, and statewide races are heating up. We need legislators at the Capitol willing to pass legislation that helps Iowa businesses. Please, make your personal contribution today here . Want more information about ABI's PAC? The most recent annual report is available here .
Races to Watch
The ABI public policy team pays close attention to races across the state and at the federal level. Each week, the Election Update newsletter will feature one to two races of interest to ABI members. As a refresher, all legislators in the Iowa House are up this year, as they serve two-year terms. Senators serve four-year terms, and half of the seats are up for election this year. The Senate seats on the ballot are the odd numbered districts. The House has a significant number of districts in play, and the Democrats have a good chance to pick up seats.  The question will be, can the Democrats flip a net 10 seats to gain the majority? The Senate scene looks much different, as the Republican majority is positioned to increase the numbers in their current 29-20-1 seat control of the Iowa Senate. This week's key races are House District 67 and Senate District 15.

House District 67 -- Rep. Ashley Hinson (R) vs. Eric Gjerde (D)
Voter registration: Republicans: 7,187; Democrats: 6,503; Independents: 8,175.  Hinson, the incumbent, has great name ID from her days as a local TV news reporter. She faces educator and deputy sheriff Eric Gjerde for this Cedar Rapids/Hiawatha area district race. Hinson has a voting record some in this moderate suburban district might disagree with, but is a formidable campaigner. Voter registrations still lean a bit more Republican than Democrat in this district, but Independents outnumber them both. Watch for the Democrat to try to pin education funding and social issues as a challenge for the Republican incumbent in this race.
Senate District 15 -- Rep. Zach Nunn (R) vs. Dan Nieland (D)
Voter Registration: Republicans: 13,819; Democrats: 14,511; Independents: 15,118. There have been many surprises in this race for a seat that encompasses Newton and Altoona. Incumbent Sen. Chaz Allen (D) dropped out of the race and was replaced by Taylor Van De Krol, who also dropped out, citing personal reasons. The original Republican candidate dropped out of the race, as well. Zach Nunn, a current Republican State Representative, stepped into the race and will now face Dan Nieland, a small business owner and adjunct professor at Des Moines Area Community College. In a seat that has a slight Democrat registration advantage, look for this district to turn red this November.
Opportunities to Interact with Candidates
Over the course of the next two months, candidates from all over the state will host fundraisers and meet-and-greets. The following are opportunities this week to meet with candidates running for office in Iowa. This list was compiled from multiple sources, including the Beltrame Report. Do you have events to add to the list? Email them to Brad Hartkopf at [email protected] . An asterisk (*) behind a candidate's name indicates an IIPAC endorsement as a Friend of Iowa Business.
