Ovation Rehearsal Reminder
Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra

As a reminder, along with regular rehearsals this Saturday (2/2), Ovation musicians have an additional rehearsal in Balboa Park next week on Thursday, February 7.

Below is the rehearsal schedule for Thursday, February 7.

Symphony Orchestra: 6:00pm to 8:00pm (5:45pm Call Time)
Chamber Orchestra: 8:10pm to 8:45pm

February 10, 2019
Sunday, February 10 Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra will perform in concert at Copley Symphony Hall. Concert attendance is required for all performing Ovation Program musicians. There will be a dress rehearsal prior to the concert, and as a reminder, any musician who misses the dress rehearsal will forfeit participation in the concert. Please remember that it is SDYS policy for all musicians to stay for the entire concert, being respectful of your conductor and fellow musicians.

Ovation musicians should arrive to the dress rehearsal in concert dress.
The Jacobs Music Center is located on B Street between 7th and 8th Avenue. The backstage door where you will drop off and pick up your musicians is located on 8th Avenue between A and B Street. 

There is no stopped parking allowed at the backstage door. Curb fronts are reserved for active loading and unloading only.

Please note: Tickets are no longer available for rehearsal pickup.  All tickets are now held at Will Call, or you may request to have them mailed for an additional fee.

We are inviting all of our students to submit a photo of themselves and their private music teacher or school orchestra/band teacher! All photos submitted will be shown at the Music Educator's Concert in March.

This season's T-shirts and Hoodies are now available for sale at rehearsals! The new shirts and hoodies feature the winning artwork by Nina Bonaventure from our annual T-shirt design contest. Please see a production assistant to purchase at rehearsals. Items can also be purchased online at sdys.org.

T-shirts are $15 (available in Youth unisex, Men's, and Women's sizes)
Hoodies are $35 (available in Men's sizes)

Please note: Merchandise is not available for delivery at this time. Please plan to pick up your order at weekend rehearsals or at the SDYS Main Office during regular business hours. 
Looking for ChIMES Guest Performers!
Would you like to be a guest performer for young children ages 0-5 and their caregivers? SDYS is seeking Conservatory musicians to be featured on a Friday or Saturday morning ChIMES music class in Balboa Park. Play a short piece of music of your choice, as well as a classic kid favorite: Twinkle Twinkle, Mary Had a Little Lamb, etc.

Guest performers needed from 10:00 am-11:30 am on these dates:

  • FRIDAYS: Feb. 1, Feb. 15, Feb. 22, March 1

This is a fun experience that also counts for community service hours!

Volunteer Opportunities
We are looking for parent volunteers to help with ticketing and reserved seating during the afternoon of Sunday, February 10 , ahead of the Ovation concert at Copley Symphony Hall.
Donate an Instrument
We are accepting wind and string instruments that will all be going to conservatory and community 
students that need them. You can drop them off Monday - Friday during regular business hours, or 
on the weekends during rehearsals.

We have an immediate need for violas and trombones!

Musicians are not allowed to exceed the maximum permitted absences according to the Musician's Handbook by participating in any events listed below.
San Diego Foundation's Common Scholarship 
Through the San Diego Foundation Community Scholarship Program, San Diego County students can receive the financial assistance they need to pursue their educational goals. As the largest private non-university scholarship provider in the county, the Community Scholarship Program operates more than 160 funds and awarded in excess of $2.7 million to more than 900 students last year alone. 

Other San Diego Foundation Scholarships include opportunities for aspiring teachers, active military residents and women in science and technology, among many others. We also encourage students to seek out Local Scholarships exclusively offered through other regional organizations. By providing students with financial support to further their education, together, we help launch bright careers and grow a vibrant region.

CMEA - SBS Solo & Ensemble
March 2, 2019
The CMEA Solo & Ensemble Festival provides students with the opportunity to perform either a solo or in a small ensemble and receive clinic-style feedback and written evaluation from an experienced adjudicator. 

Those individuals or ensembles who receive a "Superior" Rating will be eligible to participate in the State Solo & Ensemble Festival to be held in San Bernardino County during the month of May.

The CMEA-SBS Solo & Ensemble Festival is open to students in grades 4-12 Instrumental, Voice, and Guitar.

Heart of a Child
Benefit Concert Audition
The 8th annual "Heart of a Child" benefit concert will be held the evening of Saturday, May 25, 2019. Resounding Joy is looking for truly exceptional musicians in San Diego to perform at the concert. Video auditions are currently being accepted for soloist and small groups. Auditions are best submitted by YouTube, Vimeo or personal website.

Sphinx Performance Academy 2019 Summer Program  
The Sphinx Organization and Sphinx Performance Academy are proud to partner with the Curtis Institute of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music and collaborate with The Juilliard School for its SPA 2019 programming.The Sphinx Performance Academy (SPA) is a full-scholarship summer chamber music and solo performance program designed for string players, ages 11-17. As a program with a primary focus on cultural diversity, SPA seeks to actively recruit and engage students from cultural backgrounds that are underrepresented in the field of classical music.
