Welcome, Becky Showalter!
We are thrilled that Becky Showalter has agreed to serve as our interim Children's Ministry Director beginning on September 17th. Becky is terrific. Her skill sets, her experience running church programs, her connection to this community, her historical knowledge of our church and our MI community, her presence and interactive skills with children, her ability to teach elementary school age kids, and her biblical knowledge is unparalleled. We are so lucky!
Welcome, Christian Harrison!
We are excited to welcome Christian Harrison to staff as the new Director of Student Ministries. Christian will begin his time with us in mid-October. He grew up in North East Los Angeles. He has a passion for helping students and families think through and live out their faith in community. Capital Campaign Update:
Making Our Vision a Reality
As summer transitions to fall, our capital campaign also transitions to the new stage of creating building renovation plans. Most recently we selected a project manager to help us manage the inter-related tasks of upgrading our fire alarm system, re-engineering our HVAC systems, replacing much of our building roof systems and replacing our portable near the garage.

Replacement of these facility systems are part of our first tier plans and can now begin because of the $2.4 million pledged this summer, $1.165 million of which has already been received! For this we give thanks to God and for the generosity of so many of you who, by getting your payments in early, are making it possible to move forward with gathering bids, selecting contractors and scheduling the work itself.

So on behalf of all of the capital campaign members, volunteers and staff working together, thank you. You are helping MIPC Make our Vision a Reality!

Per Capita Receipts
One ask we make of members each year is to help the church with the per capita bill - that is the "membership dues" that the church is asked to pay to the Presbytery as we support the larger body in the church.  For those who checked the box on the Stewardship pledge form directing MIPC to automatically deduct the Per Capita, this transaction will process the second week of September.

The Per Capita charge is $41 per member and so far we have had 61 families out of the congregation participate in this support.  If you are a member of the church, would you please consider helping support our $32,000 obligation to the Seattle Presbytery this year?  Thank you!
Wednesday Morning Bible Study
Wednesdays from 11am-Noon in the Fireside Room

Upcoming Activities & Events

Summer Book Conversation
MIPC has been hosting a series of conversations on books that are rooted in theology and life and faith and history.  Our final conversation for the summer is next Monday:

Monday, September 17, 7pm, Fireside Room
"Take this Bread" by Sara Miles
Raised an atheist, Sara Miles lived an enthusiastically secular life. One morning, for no earthly reason, she wandered into a church. There, the sacrament of communion transformed her life and faith.

NOTE: The Animate video in this Sunday morning's Practices class at 9:15am happens to feature Sara Miles!
Animate: Practices
Sunday mornings, Fireside Room, 9:15-10:15am
Continues through October 21
A video lecture and discussion course that explores different spiritual practices. For more information please contact Margaret Redman at [email protected] or Ben McConaughy at  [email protected]
Growing in Faith Class
Embracing the Prophets in Contemporary Culture: Walter Brueggemann on Confronting Today's Pharaohs
Sunday mornings, A-B Classroom, 9:15-10:15am
Adult Education class kicks off its year with a video series by Walter Brueggemann, who is arguably America's leading Old Testament scholar and theologian. He will take us on a wild ride through the poetic prophecy of the Hebrew Scripture: identifying cultural contexts, putting a framework to Israel's history, and most significantly - and at times challenging! - drawing connections between Israel's sociological, economic and spiritual status and that of America today. Facilitated by Rosemary Sixbey.

Thursday, September 27th, 10:30am-1pm, Fireside Room
$6 donation includes Lunch, Program, and $1 to YouthCare
Rev. Tony Nugent, MIPC's first child of the church to become an ordained minister, will speak about how the values he first learned here have impacted his involvements with urban ministries with San Francisco and Seattle; post-graduate studies; teaching religion at UW and Seattle U.; and work on civil rights, anti-war, anti-torture, and interfaith dialogue. He will also talk about the need for faith communities today to uphold and promote these values at a time when they are coming under severe attack from many quarters.
Please let Ruth Ann know by Tuesday, September 25, if you will attend. [email protected] or (206) 232-5596 x 1002
MIPC Theology Class Coming in October
Psalm 8:1,3-4
"O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth...
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?"

The study of theology is our search for an understanding of God, ourselves, and the world we live in. It is our faith seeking understanding. This fall and winter we are hosting two five-week theology courses taught by the Rev. Dr. Shannon Smythe. There will be readings and discussion (but no essay assignments). The hope of this class is that everyone will find a deep conversation and open environment in which to learn about God. It's for those who have never looked at theology and those who read Karl Barth for fun. Please sign-up for the first course online or at the front desk by Sep 10.

Shannon Smythe, is assistant professor of theological studies at Seattle Pacific University and the author of two books. You can learn more about Dr. Smythe here

Sanctuary Flowers
Each Sunday, congregation members have the opportunity to provide the beauty of flowers to the sanctuary. Many donate to honor loved ones who have passed, celebrate an anniversary or birthday or just because they love seeing flowers at church. Whatever the reason, the thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated. Flowers can come from your garden or a flower shop, whatever works best for you.
Because some of our members and guests are allergic to floral fragrances it is best to plan flowers without fragrances. Thank you.

If you would like to sign up to provide flowers for an upcoming Sunday service or for more information please continue to this  link .
