Report: An Assessment of Urban Water Demand Forecasts in California
A new report from the Pacific Institute, An Assessment of Urban Water Demand Forecasts in California, finds that California’s 10 largest water suppliers overestimated future water use in 98 percent of long-range water demand forecasts between 2000 and 2015. Overestimating future demand can lead to investments in unneeded water supply and treatment infrastructure, higher costs to ratepayers, and unnecessary adverse environmental impacts.

Op-Ed: Water Resilience in the Age of COVID-19
By Jason Morrison, President
“In the past few weeks, communities around the country have experienced record-breaking rain, heat, hurricanes, and drought," writes President Jason Morrison in Next City. "We have seen flooding from failed dams and levees, as well as fires from unseasonably dry forests and grasslands. It is increasingly clear that the climate crisis is a water crisis... While it may seem overwhelming to address all these challenges simultaneously, this confluence of crises has created a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build better, more resilient water systems rather than just plugging holes. It is time to invest in true water resilience."

Report: Benefit Accounting of Nature-Based Solutions for Watersheds
Businesses are beginning to recognize the value of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resilience. But these solutions are still under-utilized, partly because of a lack of frameworks and tools for identifying and monetizing the full scope of co-benefits these solutions provide. A new report by the Pacific Institute, the CEO Water Mandate, The Nature Conservancy, and Danone identifies barriers to implementing NBS for the private sector, and suggests next steps towards implementation.
