Cohort 17 - Fall 2018



On behalf of the entire Emperor's College community, w elcome to the Emperor's College DAOM Program!   Congratulations on your appointment to the Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program .

I hope the mission of Emperor's College, to cultivate brilliant healers, teachers and leaders in Oriental medicine who create the future of health care by word, deed and through partnership, will continue to inspire you throughout the years to come.  A doctorate degree is an undertaking like none you have experienced, full of new perspectives, academic challenges and life-changing patient interactions.  Please know that we are dedicated to your academic, professional and personal success. 
Below is some information to get you ready for your first DAOM weekend.  We will also be going over these points during the Online Orientation on Monday, 9/17/18.  The Online Program Orientation will be 10 am to 12 pm, and the Online Clinic Orientation will be 1 pm to 3 pm.  Both sessions are online via Google Hangouts and are optional.  I hope to you can connect and can answer any questions you might have about the DAOM Program.

Getting Started

Invites Emailed


Shortly you'll receive 2 invites from Google Calendar.  When you receive the invite, where is asking "Going?" select YES, NO, or MAYBE to RSVP.  This gives us an idea of how many people will be joining us.  On the day of the orientation, you'll click "JOIN VIDEO CALL."  You can test your connection anytime before the meeting starts by clicking the same link.

If you can't make it to either meeting, make sure to click "NO."  We're also to record the both meetings for future viewing.  A link to the recording and the Google Slides (PowerPoint) will be provided as well.

We will try to cover as much as possible to help to onboard you before the program starts.  If there is anything that you would like us to be sure to cover during the orientation, please email me at [email protected] and I'll make sure it's included.

DAOM Online Orientation
Monday, 9/13/18 10 AM - 12 PM

  
Join us to meet our Director of Admissions, Amber Johnson (DAOM Candidate, Cohort 15) and Chris Ruth (Associate Dean for the DAOM).  

During the Online Program Orientation you'll be introduced to the logistics and policies of the program, including 
  • how to reference the DAOM schedules, 
  • access ThinkHR for your Health, Safety, and Ethics training
  • reference the DAOM website, 
  • requesting articles, 
  • and the use of Google Drive for sharing DAOM materials.

DAOM Clinic Orientation (also online)
Monday, 9/13/18 1 PM to 3 PM

During the afternoon session you'll have a chance to meet Jeni Guerrero (EC Clinic Manager), as she goes over Emperor's College Clinical Policies and Requirements.  Chris will also go over the other clinical requirements outside the outsite requirements.  

During the Online Clinic Orientation you'll be introduced to the logistics and policies of the program, including 
  • how to reference the DAOM Clinic schedules, 
  • overview of the Clinic Rounds
  • Clinical Rounds requirements
  • overview of the Medical Presentation,
  • overview of Mentorships, Preceptorships, and Service Learning

HOW TO CONNECT TO THE DAOM ORIENTATIONS

The DAOM Orientation will be hosted using Google Hangouts (Google's version of Skype).   The online orientation is optional, but strongly recommended.   

To connect you can either click on the link in the Google Calendar invite that says "JOIN VIDEO CALL" or "JOIN HANGOUTS" or click on one of the following links:

Some things to consider are to use Google Chrome on your computers or the Google Hangouts app on your phone or tablet.  Please download these right away and try them out in advance.  Please make sure that you're in range of a stable WiFi connection or have your compute directly connected to your router for the best possible connection.  If you are using a tablet or mobile device to connect, please plug in a headset with microphone to avoid any audio feedback.  

The day of the online orientation, please login early to make sure that any technical difficulties are resolved in a timely manner.  If you are having trouble connecting the morning of the orientation, please call us at 310-453-8300.

Before your first weekend

Academic  Calendar

Please review the dates carefully before making your travel arrangements.  Remember that 2x per year each cohort has a 5th day scheduled either on a Monday or Wednesday.  Save these dates in calendars now.

GET A GOOGLE EMAIL ADDRESS

Our DAOM program uses a number of different services offered by Google, including Hangouts, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Forms.  If you haven't already done so, please create your own GMAIL Account.  Please share your gmail with Amber at [email protected] and we'll update your profile.  

Please note that this will become your primary contact email for us at Emperor's College.
Create your ASAP Connected LMS account

 
Please visit https://emperorscollege.asapconnected.com/Login.aspx to c reate your  ASAP Connected LMS  account.

We use this system with our barcode reader to take attendance for the DAOM program.  

Also, some DAOM courses are approved as CE.  This is where we will be storing your CE Certificates for DAOM courses that are approved CE.   When creating an account, please select under User Type "ECTOM Student."  Add (C17) to after your last name, i.e. John Smith (C17).  This helps us with putting you in the right classes.

 

Review the Emperor's College Clinical Manual (Coming soon)

During the Online Orientation you'll be introduced to the overall DAOM Clinical Experience.  You'll be provided with the information an d knowle dge you'll nee d to be able to achieve your overall goals in the DAOM, including how to select mentors and plan your overall mentorship and preceptorship experiences.  

A separate Emperor's College Clinic Manual is in the final stages of revision and will be provided prior to the start of the program in October.  This separate manual is will reference specific policies and procedures for the Emperor's College Clinic, including EAP, Exposure Controls, forms, etc.

Take the time to explore  https://daom.emperors.edu/.  This is where the reposistory of the Emperor's College DAOM information will reside.   It's a living textbook, where program information, manuals, and resources will be uploaded and revised periodically.

CPR and First Aid Training

Start the process of renewing your CPR and First Aid certifications.  Only certifications from the American Heart Association and American Red Cross are accepted.  

If you have a BLS or other CPR cert, make sure your also get a First Aid certification.  CPR certs, especially BLS don't include First Aid, and you might have to take an addtional course.  Please note that some classes claim to follow AHA curriculum but aren't AHA or ARC.  

Upon submission of your valid CPR and First Aid certification, you'll received 10 clinical hours towards successful completion of the program.  Please email your CPR and First Aid certifiactions to [email protected]. Duplicate License and Malpractice Insurance (CA LAc Only)

California Licensed Acupucnturists are required to maintain their Acupuncture License and Malptractice Insurance throughout the duration of the program.  A duplicate license must be requested by mail directly from the CAB by the licensee, and your malpractice insurance must include Emperor's College as a secondary location.

Please email a PDF of your malpractice insurance to [email protected] to include in your file . Please submit your duplicate license to either the Clinic Director or Clinic Manager to be posted in the clinic .

Complete the Health, Safety, and Ethics Training


To ensure that we are in compliance with certain state and federal regulations, DAOM students are asked to complete a series of online training modules pertaining to Health, Safety, and Ethics.  Shortly you'll recive an email from [email protected] that will look similar to the info below:

Note:  Upon successful completion of all modules above, each student will receive 10 clinical hours towards program completion.



Finalize your Enrollment Paperwork

Please make sure that you submit your Enrollment Agreement and additional enrollment paperwork to Amber ( [email protected]) in order to register you for your classes and to process your financial aid packet, if applicable.  

Finalize your Financial Aid Paperwork

If you are planning on receiving federal financial aid and have not yet finalized your financial aid paperwork, it's very important that you do so immediately to prevent delays in your disbursement.  Please contact Financial Aid Administrator, Farida Lugembe at  [email protected] to make sure that your financial aid requirements are complete.

Schedule a Counseling Meeting


Schedule a counseling meeting with Chris sometime during the first quarter.  During that meeting, you both will discuss your academic plan, clinic shifts, mentorship/preceptorship/service learning opportunities, or anything else you might need.

Distance Commuting
For doctoral fellows who are traveling from outside the Los Angeles area, and who are in need of temporary housing opportunities during doctoral weekend, please contact Amber Johnson at [email protected] for assistance.

PARKING

Paid Parking

The parking lot behind the campus offers paid parking for all visitors to the building.  The maximum fee per day is $15.  Overnight parking is strictly prohibited.

Parking Pass

The Building Management Office offers a quarterly parking pass for Emperor's College students to park on site, which allows unlimited in and out parking.  There is a deposit of $25 for each card.  EC students can opt for a part-time pass for four (4) days a week for $195 or a full-time pass for more than five days a week for $405.  Parking passes are valid for one quarter and will need to be renewed for each additional quarter.  

How do I get my Parking Pass?

  1. Please see the Registrar, Marcia, in the office to request the form.  Print, read, complete and sign.
  2. Bring the completed form, along with payment (Cash, Check or Credit Card) to Orientation. Keep in mind that your first payment will need to include the $25 deposit fee for the physical parking pass card.
  3. Submit form and payment to Marcia at the front desk of the Emperor's College Administrative Office.
  4. Marcia will provide you with a proof of payment that you will take to the Parking Kiosk, located at the parking lot exit.
  5. The Parking Attendant will issue your pass.  Once your application is processed and your card is activated, you may then park in the Building Parking Lot for the remainder of the quarter.
  6. At the start of next quarter renew your parking pass by repeating steps 3-5.

Street Parking

Street parking is also available in the neighborhood around the campus, and with the exception of the meters, is free.  Please be mindful of the parking signs, including street sweeping signs.  Parking Enforcement in the area is very diligent!

Your first meeting weekend

Cohort 17 Five Day Weekends

Your First DAOM Weekend - Wednesday, 10/10/18 to Sunday, 10/14/18.

Your first DAOM Weekend is five days, but normally it will be only four days.  Each class starts promptly at 9 am and ends at 4 pm, with lunch from 12 to 1 pm.  Make sure to check your travel arrangements to ensure that you are here for your first day on Wednesday, 10/10/18.  Your last day for that weekend is Sunday, 10/14/18.  

Here are the other dates that are considered part of your 5 day weekends:
PD 1: Wednesday 10/10/18
PD 3: Wednesday 9/11/19 (Capstone Proposal Presentation)
PD 4: Monday 10/21/19 
PD 6: Summer Quarter September 2020  (Capstone Final Presentation)

Attend Professional Development 1 - Wen 10/10/18 9 am to 4 pm

You'll have an opportunity to meet and connect with your fellow Cohort members, faculty, and staff.  


New Student Lunch - Wednesday, 10/10/18 12 noon - 1 pm

This is your time to con nect with your new classmates, gather the resources an d knowle dge you'll nee d to be successful in the Emperor's College DAOM Program, and celebrate the journey you are about to embark on.  Lunch will be provided courtesy of Emperor's College. Please notify Amber Johnson ( [email protected]) of any dietary restrictions or allergens by Monday, 10/8/18. 

Medical Presentations - Thursday, 10/11/18 4:30 - 8:30 pm

Every DAOM weekend each Cohort is assigned to a Medical Presentation.  Your Medical Presentations are on Thursday evenings from 4:30 to 8:30 pm with Dr. Thornton and Cohort 15.  

This is a mandatory part of your overall clinical training experience.  It's scheduled on your meeting weekends and you are required to attend.  We'll give you more details during the orientation.

Clinical Rounds (DAOM Clinic) - Friday, 10/12/18 4:45 - 9 pm

DAOM Students are required to attend the DAOM Clinic aka Grand Rounds at least once a month.  

For our students that are traveling from out of the area, you'll be scheduled during DAOM weekends on Fridays with Cohort 15.  Students local to the area are scheduled to shifts outside of the meeting weekends.  

This is a mandatory part of your overall clinical training experience.  It's scheduled directly by Chris Ruth.

Student IDs

Photos for Student IDs will be taken on your first day, Wednesday, 10/10/18.  Please fill out the ID request form in the office and see Kirsten in the main office to have your photos taken.


Barcode Clock-in/Clock-out

Once you've been issued your student IDs please make sure that you bring it with you on campus.  

Use the barcode on the front of the card (same side as your picture) for Clocking in and Out of the Clinic.  If you receive and error message when clocking in, please inform the front desk and they'll have you sign in.

For all classes in the classroom, please use the ASAP Connected LMS barcode on the back with the numbers to clock-in and clock-out.

You will also use the ASAP Connected LMS barcode to clock-in/clock-out for Medical Presentations.

Faculty, Staff, alumni, and current students may request articles through our institution.  In order to accommodate your article requests for your classes or research, we've launched an article request form that can be found here:

Please make sure to include the PMID for article identification purposes.
 
Please use the above link to submit your requests and we'll get back to you when your article is available.  Before making an article request, please check to see if the article is OPEN ACCESS which means that the article can be downloaded for free to your computer.  

If you don't receive a reply to your article requests, it may be because the article isn't available from the shared library network.  To check on your article status, please email Krystin at   [email protected]

If you're looking for other resources to do your research, check with a local university or college.  Often these institutional libraries are open to the general public, or give special access for academic purposes.  The UCLA Biomed Library is a great place to start.
