Fall is here! During this first part of the school year, the Boys & Girls Club has been focusing on all of our members getting good grades, and maintaining them through the first semester. Over 125 youth are receiving homework help and tutoring daily in our after school programs.
Thank you Jackie McBeth for being instrumental in filling our youths back packs with school supplies!
Our
Masquerade Ball is right around the corner, on October 13th at the Sequoia Conference Center. We will be honoring Ryan Sundberg as our "Lance Madson Champion For Youth". This will be the most fun dinner and auction yet, so come dressed formal, informal, with or without a mask, you will have a great time either way! This is our largest fundraiser of the year and all of the proceeds from this event support our local organization. The success of this event helps to insure that we are able to provide programs, to youth ages 5-18, that focus on Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles and Good Character and Citizenship. Random Acts of Science
Fun Fridays at the Clubhouse aren't all fun and games, they're also science! During one of our Fun Fridays, members were able to use the scientific method to determine which bottle of soda, Diet Cola, Cola, or Lemon Lime, would produce the highest explosion. Members also tested out various methods of getting the Mentos inside the bottles of soda, with dispensers made of Legos, cardboard, and foam. The highest explosion was still with the old classic, Diet Cola!

Making a Splash at Power Hour
Our Klamath Club members were rewarded for their hard work and dedication in our Power Hour program with an awesome pool party last Friday. Club members were required to attend 70 percent of the Power Hour sessions that were available. Staff want to ensure that all members start off the school year strong and ready to focus on their academics. JOM tutors from the Yurok Tribe are available during Power Hour to help assist youth with high level math and English homework. We are thankful for our partnership with the Yurok Education Department!

Ending Gender Stereotypes
The McKinleyville Teen Center decided to combine SMART Girls and Passport to Manhood, programs that focus on helping young women and men transition into healthy adulthood, and which are usually kept separate, for a special program this month dedicated to analyzing harmful gender stereotypes. Members took part in a discussion and had the opportunity to answer true or false questions afterword. Members were incredibly mature and insightful, and the discourse was truly powerful and eye-opening.

Clean Up, Everybody Do Your Share
On Monday September 17th, Keystone members from our Eureka Teen Center jumped into the community to clean up the streets. Twelve members focused on a three block radius of the Teen Center for 2 hours. As a team, they removed litter, recycling, and other debris.
Keystone Club give
teens an opportunity to gain valuable leadership and service experience, and conduct activities in three areas: academic success, career exploration and community service.

Tabling at Redwood Pride Festival
On September 29th, Teen Court had four youth volunteers, one intern and staff, along with one local attorney volunteer- Damara Moore attend this years Annual Pride Festival. They played a special dice game to introduce visitors to the juvenile justice system, handing out buttons and stickers, and made recruitment efforts. The booth was a huge success due to the committed volunteers. Thank you!

Nutrition Club
Cooking Crew (Nutrition Club) is one of the most successful programs at the McKinleyville Teen Center. Each week on Tuesday and Thursday, members gather in the commercial kitchen and learn how to prepare and cook a healthy dish for themselves and their loved ones. This month, one of the Teen Center's high school members, Quin, brought in his sous vide cooker and helped teach younger members how to use it to make pulled pork. The sous vide cooker takes 24 hours, so on Tuesday, members seasoned the pork and put it in the cooker and on Wednesday, they enjoyed pulled pork sandwiches for snack time.

Ismale Alvarez
Ismael is an awesome young person who we recruited from the Teen Center in April of this year. He has become steadily more involved in Teen Court, recently stepping up to serve as clerk several times, which clearly boosted his confidence. After that service, Ismael stepped up to a new level and is now scheduled to attend our Attorney training in October. We are really happy to have Ismael joining our program!

Taylor moved to Humboldt County over five years ago to pursue her goal of earning a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science at Humboldt State University. Her goal is to create policies that would help fund programs such as the Boys & Girls Club. In Taylor's spare time, she enjoys kayaking, watching sports and adventuring. She also likes to travel around trying new food, which helps her appreciate the diversity within people and culture. She enjoys running programs like Project Learn, Money Matters and Triple Play.
