In honor of African American History Month, the Center will be screening A Man Named Pearl. This film follows the life of African American topiary artist, Pearl Fryar. Pearl began sculpting topiary after he moved to Bishopville, South Carolina and felt like an outsider among his all-white neighbors. Pearl's topiary creations now attract tourists from all across the world and gave him a path to inclusion in his new community. Light refreshments will be provided. Learn more about Pearl's story and discuss what can be learned from him and his experiences.

Gut health issues are a factor for every other type of health issue. It can be a complicated topic and you may not know where to start. So start simply-small steps lead to big changes.
Class will be conducted by Bonnie Peterson, a Certified Health Coach since 2012. Bonnie has also recently received certification in the Healthy Gut Program for Practitioners. Since experiencing the benefits of incorporating cultured foods into her own diet, she has become passionate to share with others simple food prep techniques that can help them with gut health issues such as digestive distress, bloating, and constipation.
You will leave with the 15 Cultured Smoothies booklet, plus the Smoothies 101 booklet with even more recipes and everything you'd ever need to know about making nutrient packed, delectable smoothies. Cost is $18.

Intro to the Potter's Wheel with Buddy Dobbins

Have you ever wanted to try the potter's wheel? Now is your opportunity! In this 2 hour class, you will get to try, with help, throwing a pot on the wheel after a detailed demonstration. For an additional 5 dollar fee, you can have one of your pieces fired and glazed-fried again to a finished usable ceramic piece. Cost is $40.

Wood Quilt Block Workshop with Laura Petrovich-Cheney

Trained as a sculptor and fashion designer, Petrovich-Cheney collects debris in the aftermath of tragedy. She repurposes salvaged wood from disasters like Hurricane Sandy in New York, and New Jersey, as well as the fires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, into luminous, quilt-like constructions.
Cheney doesn't use just any reclaimed wood - her material of choice is the colorful exterior wood from disaster-struck buildings. In the aftermath of a hurricane or flood, when the harsh reality of destruction is so overwhelming, she visits damaged places to aid in the cleanup efforts and to find and recycle boards, cladding and other elements for her art.
Cheney's work is in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States, and she was recently awarded a 2017 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Innovators

The Kentucky Artisan Center Presents "Innovators: Stephen Rolfe Powell & Arturo Alonzo Sandoval" to recognize two internationally known Kentucky Artists who have been innovators in their respective fields. Both Powell and Sandoval have expanded boundaries by utilizing unusual materials and pushing their mediums into new and exciting formats.
Powell, who is known for his large and intricately patterned and colorful blown glass, has recently begun to arrange and fuse colorful sliced murrini onto a large flat canvas of glass. After the color fuses, he slumps the entire piece into a concave freestanding wall of color. These new glass walls called "Zoomers" take Powell's work into the realm of architecture.
Powell's blown glass is also adorned with intricate murrini colors and patterns. His new blown glass vessels twist and turn - with necks evolved to support the visually floating forms.
Sandoval is known for weaving with a wide variety of unusual materials. His large woven works are made from recycled auto industry Mylar, recycled library 35 mm microfilm, netting, Holographic film, Pellon and numerous other industrial materials.
Sandoval's background is both Hispanic and Native American and it provides clues into his interest in the fiber arts. His mother wove countless blankets and the men on his paternal grandmother's side wove colonial Spanish textiles. Even though his family wove textiles, Sandoval's works are monumental in size. His subject matter reflects current social and cultural themes and the works in this exhibit offer his reflection on the world of technology.
The Kentucky Veterans Project
(through March 2, 2019)
The Kentucky Artisan Center will feature a travelling exhibit by the Kentucky Art Council titled, The Kentucky Veterans Project in the Center's lobby.
An opening reception will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Center.
This exhibit includes 44 works by Kentucky veterans and veteran family members from 23 counties across the state. Imagery depicted is varied, including scenes from active duty, remembrances of service and a variety of landscapes and scenes from Kentucky.
The Kentucky Veterans Project exhibit will travel across the state to numerous venues and Veterans Centers, as well as the Kentucky Art Council's Kentucky Crafted Market held at the Kentucky Horse Park March 15-17, 2019.
Saturday Demonstrations

February 2- Louie Northern gives his oil paintings a three-dimensional texture by building up the surface of his canvas with gesso. For his demonstration, he will show how he uses this white paint mixture consisting of a binder mixed with chalk, gypsum or pigment. Northern's subject matter is rooted in his surroundings - farmland, mules, logging trucks and woods that grow on his lands.
February 9-
Janet Northern has been making baskets for 20 years and is primarily self-taught. She utilizes the wood and natural vines that she finds and gathers in the region surrounding her Rockcastle County farm to create her baskets. She will demonstrate her basketmaking techniques and talk about how the eastern Kentucky woodlands give her inspiration as well as material from which to work.
February 16- Two members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate a variety of woodcarving styles and techniques at the Kentucky Artisan Center
February 23- Jeannette Rowlett, of Berea, creates jewelry by wrapping sterling silver wire into a variety of shapes. For her demonstration, she will incorporate semi-precious stones and Austrian crystal in her works. Rowlett is also the director of the Kentucky Guild of Artists & Craftsmen.

Defining Infinity, an original play, explores individuals' stories about the spectrums of both gender and sexual orientation.
