WELCOME TO RUTIZ FARMS

Price increase for our Harvest Box:
During the last few months, we have realized that as we strive to make each week's Harvest Box interesting and varied for our customers, we are including well over the value of $18 worth of veggies and fruits.  Together with the value of the produce, along with the labor to pack the boxes and the cost of the carton,  we have decide to raise the price of each week's Harvest Box to $20 beginning  this Friday ..  By charging $2 more per box, we can continue to put a nice selection of      our farm's harvest in each week's box.  Keep in mind that everything we include in each week's box can be brought "a la cart " on our farm stand table, but we will continue to offer a little "extra" value of produce when you purchase the Harvest Box.

TWO SPECIAL GUESTS COMING TO OUR FARM THIS WEEK
This Friday, Sept. 14, we welcome Chef Courtney Carden, She gained most of her experience when she ran and owned Petes's Pierside Cafe in Avila Beach. She currently works as a personal chef and does catering.  Starting at noon on Friday, Courtney will be doing a cooking demo with veggies from our farm and making pesto, salsa and salads, along with giving free samples of her creations!

Beekeeper Shelly Fox, owner of SLO Bee Love, will be here on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 11 to 3 pm,  offering for sale a small batch of freshly extracted honey produced by bees she raises here on the farm. She's bringing an observation hive with live bees and she'll be on hand to answer all of your honey bee and honey-related questions. It's a great opportunity to bring the kids to get an up close look at the bees, try on bee suits and learn more about how honey is produced.

WHAT'S NEW AT THE FARM THIS WEEK
Our Jicama is crunchy, mild, and sweet, and is often served with a little lime juice and chile powder to accompany Mexican dishes. Wash off the dirt and peel the outer skin and then you are ready to go! My favorite way is to cut it up into "sticks" and use the jicama raw as a "dipping" vegetable.

Fresh and dried jujubes from Rock Front Ranch.

U-pick tomatoes ( $2/ pound) , blackberries ( $4/ pound ) and raspberries ( $5/ pound) will be available this week on the farm.
A special price on our own raspberries and blackberries "already picked by our crew " on the stand table..for this week any 3 baskets for $10...mix or match.

THIS FRIDAY AT THE STAND.
BeeWench Farms chicken, pork and bone broth.
Little Red Hen bread
BlissRiver Organics elderberry syrup.
Kacey Cakes gluten free treats
Tiber Canyon olive oils.
Central Coast Catch will only be offering fish for her CSF members..no retail sales . Contact Jo for more info on her CFS ( [email protected] ).

What's in this week's Box?
Grown on our farm using organic farming methods:
lavender, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, celery, green beans, eggplant, onions, zucchini, blackberries and cucumbers .
The avocados are grown by Holger, a "backyard" farmer right here in Oceano.  Pesticide free and fertilized organically.

Take the bunch of lavender included in this week's box and hang it up in your kitchen or bathroom..it will give the whole room a nice fragrance!
Eggplant....don't be afraid of this strange looking vegetable.  Because our eggplants our so fresh, they won't be bitter flavored like "store bought" eggplants that might be weeks old.  Simply cut the eggplant up into 1 inch cubes ( you can even leave the skins on ),  and saute with a little olive oil ( and onions, garlic, tomatoes, zucchini and green beans...if you wish ) until softened.  Eggplant will take on the flavor of whatever else is in the pan with it.

Shishito peppers are great roasted or sauteed.  You can grill or cook in a frying pan.  We slice them up very thin, saute in some olive oil and add to our salad, also just throw them whole on the bbq or in a fry pan with a little olive oil, and roast until the skin darkens, eat as a side dish.  They are neither spicy or sweet, just delicious for what they are!

Italian Romano green beans...a flat shaped green bean, with more flavor than our regular Blue Lake green beans. The Romanos required a bit more cooking time to get tender...but their extra flavor is well worth it...our restaurants request these all the time.

Grill up the zucchini on your bar-b-que...slice the zucchini lengthwise into strips, coast with olive oil and seasonings, grill over high heat until brown.
