Kathy Izard is an author and speaker who helped bring transformation to Charlotte in homelessness, housing and mental health. Her award-winning memoir The Hundred Story Home has been featured on NPR and inspires people to be changemakers in their communities. In November, she will be honored as a William J. Clinton Distinguished Lecturer at the Clinton School of Public Service.
Giving Voice to Your Passion: How to Tell Effective Stories about What Matters Most
In this talk, Kathy will share some lessons she's learned about getting what matters to you most onto the page - and into a publisher's hands. When Kathy Izard began working on her first manuscript in 2011 her writer's voice wasn't yet fully formed, but she knew she had important stories to tell about the four years she had spent working with homeless people in Charlotte. She felt she had witnessed some miracles and felt passionate about getting those stories into the world. After six years and fifteen drafts, those stories were woven into a manuscript that became an award-winning, self-published memoir and finally, a book contract for The Hundred Story Home.

Short Story Workshop, Sarah Creech

Sarah Creech is the author of
Season of the Dragonflies and
The Whole Way Home, which was nominated for the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction. Her short fiction and essays have appeared in various publications, including Lit Hub, The Cortland Review, Writer's Digest, and StorySouth. She's an Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at Queens University of Charlotte.
Show AND Telling
Too often teachers admonish beginning writers with the familiar adage "show, don't tell" like it's a firm rule. And it's true that writing rendered entirely in exposition fails to create the urgency and vividness of story, but it's also true that prose writers must tell sometimes too. So when do we show and when do we tell? What's the balance? Which moments demand the sensory experience of scene and which moments need the context that telling can provide? In this class, we will study showing and telling in scenes from classic and contemporary works of literature and discuss the choices writers make, and we will participate in writing exercises to better help us apply showing and telling in our creative work.
Cost is $30 for CWC members and $40 for non-members.

- Contest now open. Closes March 19.
- Open to all CWC members and to non-member residents of North and South Carolina.
- Entries must be an original and unpublished. This includes blogs, Facebook, websites and any other digital media.
- Fiction story between 1500-4000 words.
- Multiple entries are NOT allowed.
- Entry Fees: CWC Members: $20.00, Non-members: $25.00
- Prizes will be awarded in May at the CWC general meeting.
- First place: $250.00, Second place: $150.00, Third place: $50.00.

CWC Open Mic Nights at Mug's Coffee!

Open Mic Night - February 15th from 7pm-9pm
CWC and Mug's Coffee are partnering to provide an opportunity for CWC Members to read their work every third Friday of each month from 7pm - 9pm. Registration is limited to 12 readers who must be CWC members. Each reader will get 10 minutes to read their work.
This is a great opportunity for our members to share what they've written and gain experience reading in public. This is a necessary skill to promote your writing. The added benefit is being able to network with other writers.
