Maplewood Concludes Successful 15-Year Breeding Program
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Reno, Nevada - January 7, 2019  - Maplewood Stables, Inc., announces the conclusion of their breeding program in 2019. With the impending retirement of the foundation stallions Osilvis and Cartouche Z from stud, Maplewood will be closing the doors on a long and successful program that has produced multiple winning grand prix show jumpers, champion hunters and sport horses that have excelled at all levels in a variety of disciplines.

Maplewood will offer their broodmare band for sale, some in foal for May and others open for the upcoming breeding season.

In addition, Maplewood also offers for sale many young sport horse prospects, from weanlings to 5-year-olds by Osilvis (Silvio II--Iregina, Nimmerdor) and Cartouche Z (Carthago--Fernando, Le Mexico).

"I never intended to be in the breeding business, but in the early 2000s I purchased a 6-year-old Dutch stallion as a grand prix prospect, and within a year I acquired a 5-year-old Zangersheide stallion as a grand prix prospect," said Maplewood owner and founder Julie Winkel. "And even then, I wasn't thinking about breeding. But I went over to Europe to see the Osilvis offspring over there and bought five yearlings and imported them. We began breeding in 2003 and had our first crop in 2004."

As Osilvis and Cartouche Z rose up the levels in show jumping to the grand prix level with Julie and her son, Kevin, it quickly became apparent to them that the offspring of Osilvis and Cartouche Z inherited their sires' talents. The first few foal crops included future grand prix winners Osophia, Onyx, Optical Illusion and Cartel, to name just a few.

In addition, other offspring proved themselves show ring winners with juniors and amateurs, such as Cartridge, Carma, Oxford and Outspoken.

"My vision in breeding these stallions was to produce offspring that would serve the American market, meaning these horses would have scope and ability but also balance and brains for the average American trainer, professional, amateur and junior to be successful with, and I feel I've accomplished that goal," Winkel added.

With her purpose solidly established, Winkel didn't venture out to breed to outside stallions and eventually matched her some of her two stallions' offspring together for Osilvis--Cartouche Z crosses. The resulting youngsters are just beginning their show ring careers, and Winkel is looking forward to seeing where these impressive bloodlines take them.

"I was never interested in breeding to other European stallions because I knew what I was getting with my stallions," she said. "I personally trained and showed them, took them to the grand prix level, so have a personal attachment to their offspring," she said.

"Perhaps that's why it's now that I realize I've protected them a little too much, as far as not trying too hard to sell them," she added smiling. "Now that the stallions are older, and I realize I own 45 horses, I need to be more realistic and find good people and good jobs for the ones I've produced. They're ready to establish their own careers and legacies."

"Anyone who remembers these stallions competing knows how special they are and how special it would be to own one of their offspring," said Winkel. "Osilvis does have a limited amount of frozen semen available, however, we have no frozen of Cartouche Z. The young horses available now will be his grand finale."
