January 31, 2019 / 31 de Enero 2019
Sisters and Brothers,

There is much to share about what is going on at St. Jerome's this week. On Saturday, we will be hosting a Memorial for HolliAnn May, the mother of Tristan, Trent and Tracy May (and the ex-wife of Douglas May). Please keep the May family in your prayers as they grieve this unexpected loss.

On Sunday, we will be celebrating Scout Sunday and several of our youngsters (those who are in Scouts) will be assisting in leading worship. It is a day to celebrate this new program in our church, to honor our youth and to encourage them in their faith.

After worship you are invited to join us for a Fiesta. We'll be observing the Mexican tradition of eating Tamales on the Feast of the Presentation, also known as Candlemas. Those who found a baby Jesus doll in their 3 King bread (Rosca) are traditionally those who supply the Tamales. Other folks are invited to bring a side-dish if possible. Good food? Hey you had me at Tamales!

On Sunday, during our T amale Fiesta, we will also have an impromptu Baby Shower for Miriam Duran. The baby is due the second week of February, so the arrival of Baby Duran is close at hand. When was the last time we had a baby shower for one of our own? I suspect it has been a while. If you are willing, please consider bringing a baby gift (the baby is a boy).

Lastly, please review the prayer list. There are some folks who are experiencing some significant illness or other struggles recently. Let's keep the prayers going.

Blessings!
Fr. Dewayne
Hermanas y Hermanos,

Bendiciones!
Padre Dewayne

Celebrating Candlemas
- A Mexican Twist - This Sunday!
Candlemas Tamales?

On February 2nd, many Christians in other countries celebrate the Feast of Candlemas. Candlemas marks the 40th day after the birth of Christ and marks the end of the purification period a Jewish woman was traditionally required to observe after giving birth. The Feast receives its name based on the practice of folks bringing in candles to be blessed - affirming the belief that Jesus is the Light of the World.

In Mexico, the Candlemas observance was blended with native Aztec celebrations. This created the tradition of sharing Tamales on February 2nd - Candlemas Day. In this custom, those who found a baby Jesus doll in their slice of the Rosca (the Three Kings bread) on January 6th are considered to be the "godparent" of the Christ child and are responsible for providing the Tamales that will be eaten on February 2nd. This is also the date in which statues of the Christ child are traditionally dressed in clothes that depict him in ways that speak to his holy identity.

This Sunday those who found the baby Jesus in their piece of the Rosca will be bringing Tamales for our fellowship time together. Folks wishing to participate in this Mexican tradition are invited to bring other foods that might go well with Tamales. We hope everyone will join us for this fun observance and will take time to enjoy some good Mexican food!

Candelaria Tamales?

$5 Rosary Fundraiser
Rosary Raffle

Our Latino sisters and brothers are selling raffle tickets for a beautiful (large) rosary. (Each bead is about the size of a nickle.) The raffle tickets will mostly be sold to folks outside the church, as a way to raise money for St. Jerome's ongoing mission and ministry. Tickets are $5 each. Those of us who are members and who would like to purchase a ticket are encouraged to do so. All those who purchase a ticket will be remembered in the first Spanish Mass after Easter. So either way, you come out a winner!
