Embodied Spiritual Practice
Saturday, 9/15 at 1:30PM
From Rabbi Katie: When I returned from Sabbatical a couple of years back, my soul was generating a question -- what would it look like for Or Shalom to explore a more embodied spiritual practice? In the past few months, a small group of Or Shalomers has begun to explore and experiment with me and one another to respond to that question.
Our next "Embodied Spiritual Practice Lab" will take place on the special Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We will be capping our number at 15 in order to fit in the space and create some intimacy for this work. If you would like to join us, please email the office. You will receive a confirmation with the location.

Or Zarua's observance of Shabbat Bereishit will begin with Morning Tefilah at 10:00am, followed by kiddush and pot luck lunch (roughly 12:15-1:30). At 1:30pm, we will dig in deep with the following teaching.
Learning Session: Imagining Torah-Writing at the Center of Contemporary Jewish Civilization
Two hundred years from now, will our descendants recognize the origin of a Torah scroll that we will write, in the coming decade, on kosher roadkill deerskin, with a feather quill shed by a great egret, in a distinctive East Bay ktav (script)?
For most of our history, Torah was crafted locally, down the street or perhaps in the next town, with diverse materials and writing styles. How might Torah be written in this time and place by members of our own communities? What economic, ecological, artistic and religious priorities would need to shift to enable this essential Jewish sacred craft to be done right here?

Highlight from the Spark! Calendar:
Welcome the Poor with Refuge
September 18th, 8AM | 630 Sansome St, SF The morning before Kol Nidre, we will be holding a vigil of selichot, kavanot, song and torah. One of the specific commands Isaiah places on our shoulders, is that the fast God desires obligates us to 'Welcome the Poor with Refuge.' In 2018, this living Torah calls on us offer refuge to the stranger and the immigrant, to end the abuse and inhumanity at our southern border (and all borders), to call for the abolishment of ICE and freedom for all migrants/refugees/Latinx people/immigrant families everywhere. All are invited to dress in their Yom Kippur whites, offer their living torah, and bring heavy, humble hearts.
