Texting Families and Students During Crises
Families and high school students will now receive emergency texts from the district. The communications team will also send emergency robo-calls and robo-emails. Messages will be sent during crises such as lockdowns, evacuations and weather delays/closures. We are excited about this change because sending text messages will inform families and students of crises in a much shorter time frame than what it takes for a robo-call or robo-email to be delivered.

Families of high school students, please fill out this Google form in order to sign up your student to receive emergency texts.

Parents and guardians, you have been automatically opted-in to receive emergency texts based on cell phone numbers provided during registration. Please check to make sure your information is up-to-date in Parent Portal. Messages will be sent in English and Spanish.

Learn more about lockdowns and lockouts  here .
Honor Roll Celebration
Honor roll celebration for last spring's GPAs will be held on Wednesday, 9/19 at 2:15pm during office hours. Prizes will be given to one student in each category (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Academic Letterman).
Every Penny Helps!
TJ is partnering with St. Jude to end childhood cancer.  The Challenge: If TJ raises $20,000 for St. Jude we will get a new gym floor.  This is a great cause and will also benefit the school.  The kids are already excited about it and it's a meaningful way to involve our TJ community as well.

Why is the prize a new gym floor, you ask?  St. Jude determined the prize.  Our gym floor still has a few years of life left, but if we're able to get it replaced this year it will save us money in the future so we can allocate the money that we would've had to spend on the gym floor to other things at TJ.  PLUS this is such a great cause that we don't really see a downside to participating.  Help kids with cancer and help TJ!

We'll be rolling this out on social media, the TJ website, newsletter, and on Spartan Edition.

The end goal is to have $20,000 raised by October 22... a big ask but I think we're up for the challenge!

If you want to participate, send the link out to your friends and family to donate.  Every penny helps!

Ladies of Value
Hello Parents,

If you have not already heard, we would like to introduce you to an organization called Ladies Of Value (LOVE) that will be meeting weekly at Thomas Jefferson High.

The mission is to illuminate the value that is hidden within our young ladies through authentic life skills, one on one mentoring and programs designed to prepare young women for the real world. The objective is to have well rounded women in education, finances, appearances and life experiences, in addition to having a genuine love for self. Self-value, the power of words, perception, and dating are just some of the topics we will be covering.
Our meetings are held in room 129 during the lunch hour on Wednesdays.
Our purpose is to help your young ladies grow into women that will become contributors not only to the TJ community but to society as a whole.

Topics: What is love - What is Self-love, Self-Image - Perception, Self-Image - Self presentation, presenting self accurately/dress , Value/Worth, Phenomenal Woman, Social Life - Relationships, friendship/family - Social Media, Words/Social Media, Appearance, Environment/Atmosphere,   Dating - Group dating, public (2parts), Sex/Body, Finances, Etiquette, Home Economics, Cooking, Health and Wellness

Your support and help is welcomed and needed. Please encourage your daughters to attend our meetings regularly. If you happen to be free during our meeting times, please feel free to drop in on a meeting. Also, word of mouth goes really far. If you know of any other DPS schools grades 6-12 that you feel may benefit from our program please be sure to mention LOVE as well as providing school names and if possible, contact information. If you have any questions, please contact us. Thank you in advance for all of your support.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
Did You Know?

Healthy Relationships #1 High school can be filled with a variety of different relationships. Sometimes it is hard to know if a relationship is healthy or unhealthy.

Three main ingredients for a healthy relationship:
  • Trust
  • Mutual Respect
  • Honest Communication
Characteristics of a Healthy Relationship:
  • Both people feel respected, supported, and valued
  • Both people make decisions together
  • Both people have friends and interests outside of the relationship
  • The couple settles disagreements with open and honest communication
  • There are more good times than bad
Some numbers...
  • One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner (1)
  • One of out 10 Colorado high school students surveyed have experienced dating violence (2)
  • Being physically or sexually abused makes teen girls six times more likely to become pregnant and twice as likely to get a STI. (3)
  • Violent relationships in adolescence put victims at higher risk for: substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior and future domestic violence (4)
  • Only 33% of teens who were in a violent relationship ever told anyone about the abuse
  • Research and data collected suggests that when surveyed, in the last 12 months 10% of teens were physically abused in an intimate relationship. And 20-30% were psychologically, verbally emotionally abused within the last 12 months. (5)

DPS is Joining the Be the Influence Parent Initiative
This is a great way to increase your parental involvement!

DPS is joining a growing parent initiative called " Be the Influence " in an effort to reduce our students' use of alcohol, marijuana, nicotine and other drugs. Be the Influence is a parenting program developed to reduce teen alcohol, marijuana and other drug use by empowering parents with information and the tools to support their children in making healthy and safe choices. The DPS Substance Use Prevention Program is collaborating with the  Denver Partnership for Youth Success  and  Smart Colorado  to bring Be the Influence to DPS.
