Together We Achieve the Extraordinary!

Last Friday was the end of the 1st nine weeks for 2018-2019. Student report cards will go home Monday, October 29th. With the official start to the 2nd nine weeks yesterday, we are looking forward to amazing teaching and learning activities. This week's Tiger Post, is focused around various celebrations of our students, staff members, and parents. We want to finish out this first week of the second quarter as an "Outstanding" one here at Tangelo Park Elementary where we are adjusting, accelerating, and educating.

Thank you parents, for making our Hispanic Heritage Parent Night a huge success as we were entertained by our Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade Tigers. They have a lot talent and we enjoyed them all.

We are the Tangelo Tigers - making adjustments, accelerating, and educating!

Educationally yours,

Mrs. Lakeitha Black
Proud Principal

Tangelo Park Mentoring
Two quality programs available to all of our Tigers!

Our mentoring school organizations Young Ladies of Distinction and Young Men of Promise were created to teach our youth about building positive relationships, displaying quality character trait, and exhibiting positive behaviors towards their peers and adults. In addition, students who join either of these organizations will experience great deal of fun social activities and life-skill lessons!

If you are interested in your male or female student joining these school-based clubs/organizations, please feel free to email Young Ladies of Distinction sponsors, Krystle Iton at [email protected] or Lakeitha Black at [email protected] and Young Men of Promise sponsor, David Waller at [email protected]

Academics
Science with Ms. Friscella and Ms. Alicea
Weekly snapshots of "rigor in the classroom" at Tangelo Park . . .

Ms. Friscella's gifted students will be engaged in "problem-based learning" soon. We are working on the "how to conduct effective research" part of it, which falls within the FDOE Florida Gifted Frameworks Goal #3. By graduation, the student identified as gifted will be able to conduct thoughtful research/exploration in multiple fields. Within the goal, Objective A: Use a variety of research tools and methodologies, and B: Use and manipulate information sources.

Evan was showing Jaylin how to locate images that are not copyright restricted, and therefore safe to use in presentations and other products.

Tiger Token Store

HOW: Teachers will specifically give their students points instead of physical token slips. Students will be given token slips as a reward for positive behavior from any adult on campus and they will turn them in to their teacher to log in.

WHEN: The teacher will deposit (log) the points into the Tiger Token Bank spreadsheet. Once a month, the students will go to the store on their designated day with their withdrawal slip to shop in the Tiger Token Store. Students must use all tokens at one time, as points will not roll over.

A:  I am in my 5th year teaching at OCPS and my 3rd year being at Tangelo Park Elementary

Q: Where did you graduate from college?
A: I graduated from University of Central Florida with a Bachelor's in Sociology.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being an educator?

Hispanic Heritage Month Project
Ms. Delgado's kindergarten class

Our country for Hispanic Heritage Month was Chile and the students colored the national bird, flower, and a traditional dance from Chile (below). We made pinwheels with the Chile flag colors because in Chile they use them during their annual Independence Day celebration.

This Week's Motivational Moment

What Do Teachers Make?

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a wealthy business CEO of a large manufacturing company, decided to explain the problem with education today.

He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers, "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

To emphasize his point he said to another  guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you really make?" Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make?" She paused for a second, then began.

"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor."

"I make kids sit through 50 minutes of class time when their parents can"t make them sit for five minutes without an iPod, Game Cube or Netflix movie download."  She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table, and continued, "You all want to know what I make?"

"I make kids wonder."

"I make them question."

"I make them apologize and mean it."

"I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions."

"I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything."

"I make them read, read, read."

"I make them show all their work in math. They use their God-given brain, not the man-made calculator or laptop."

"I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity."

"I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe."

"I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life."

Pausing one last time, Bonnie continued, "Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't  everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant. You want to know what I make?"

"I make a difference."

"What do you make, Mr. CEO?"

His jaw dropped, and he was silent. The other dinner guests all smiled, stood up, and applauded.

Enjoy the rest of your week Tigers!
