The Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Tournament is right around the corner. The 18-hole tournament will be held on Saturday, September 29, with a 9:00am registration, and a 10:00am shotgun start. This year brings us back to the Searsport Pines Golf Course. They served as a wonderful home for the tournament in the past and this year we return with the added fun of Oktoberfest.

1. An estimated tax payment in 2018 could help avoid a penalty in 2019
Taxes must be paid as you
earn or receive income during the year, either through withholding,
estimated tax payments or a combination of both. A Paycheck Checkup using the IRS
Withholding Calculator can help you see if you need to make an additional payment to avoid an unexpected tax bill or underpayment penalty when you file your tax return next year.
2. Clarification for business taxpayers: Payments under state or local tax credit programs may be deductible as business expenses
Business taxpayers who make business-related payments to charities or government entities for which the taxpayers receive state or local tax credits can generally deduct the payments as business expenses. See

3. IRS launches new easy-to-use webpages on tax reform
Business owners and self-employed taxpayers should make IRS.gov/taxreform their first stop for information on how tax reform affects both their business and individual taxes. The updated
IRS.gov/tax reform page has helpful information for three types of taxpayers:
individuals,
businesses and
tax exempt entities.
4. Tax facts for seasonal job seekers
Small business owners and self-employed taxpayers often get seasonal jobs to earn extra spending money or to save for later. But many don't realize that they need to report income from a part-time or temporary job to the IRS.
The IRS offers this
fact sheet for those working seasonal jobs and other part-time employment to help them correctly file and pay their taxes.

DownEast Treatment Center Open House Set for September 13
|
On
Thursday, September 13, 2018, community members are invited to tour AMHC’s newly-opened DownEast Treatment Center in Ellsworth. The DownEast Treatment Center (DTC), located at 406 State Street (Suite 2), is a treatment hub offering comprehensive medication assisted treatment - or MAT - services, for people with substance use conditions. DTC’s evidence-based treatment approach employs integrated behavioral health and medication management to help individuals achieve sustained recovery.
DTC administration, clients, staff and partners welcome members of the community to join them in celebrating recovery and National Recovery Month from 11:30am to 1:00pm on September 13. The open house event will include an overview of treatment services and an opportunity to connect with members of the DTC treatment team and administrators. Attendees will also hear from community members in recovery willing to share their experiences with DTC and MAT services. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 12:45pm. Light snacks and refreshments will be available.
DownEast Treatment Center services are confidential and open to anyone who meets admission criteria.
DTC accepts MaineCare, private insurance, and self-payment. Grant funding is available for qualifying individuals to reduce self-pay fees. Appointments may be scheduled through AMHC’s Access Center by calling: 1-800-244-6431. Clinic Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 8am to 5pm.

Her award-winner work is recognized internationally for its contribution to the vitality of cities and lanscapes, and the civic cultural and educational institutions they serve.
Ms. Rodriguez will discuss her body of work in the context of an interpretive architecture inspired by the unique culture and program of each project, creating buildings that forge lasting connection tot he place. Her work is dedicated to the power of architecture to effect change and improve the quality of life for all.

¡Hola! Cuba
September 18 (7 p.m.)
Have you ever wanted to visit Cuba, but were unsure about all the rules and logistics? Join Sue Hazlett on Tuesday, September 18 (7 p.m.) at the Wilson Museum's Hutchins Education Center, for a talk, co-sponsored by the Museum and the Castine Woman's Club, about negotiating the process of visiting Cuba and having a great time. From pristine beaches to old cars, Cuba is an amazing place to explore! Sue spent two weeks in Havana, Cuba, this year and would love to share her experiences.
Sue Hazlett is an Alaskan who moved to Castine five years ago and teaches at Maine Maritime Academy. She spends her summers working for cruise lines such as Princess, P&O, and Cunard; and is fortunate enough to be able to travel extensively. Recent travels have taken her to Alaska, Japan, Iceland, Ireland, and the Caribbean, including two weeks in Havana, Cuba.
This program is free and open to the public.

In the 16 years that Purple Fleece has been open, I’ve learned that things change. Well, it’s official; the physical store will be closing in the next few months. There’s no need to panic however. The hand dyeing part of Purple Fleece will continue full force and on-line at

One of America's most hypnotic and original performers, Prima's career spanned several decades and turned out hits like "That Old Black Magic," "Sing, Sing, Sing," "Just a Gigolo," "I Ain't Got Nobody" and "Jump, Jive an' Wail." In Disney's animated classic "The Jungle Book," Prima created the "hep" voice of King Louie the orangutan. This film profiles the magnetic Prima in a nostalgic historical journey through the music scenes of a racy New Orleans, the swinging jazz culture of uptown New York and Las Vegas's "formative" years. As a solo act or with his wife, singer Keely Smith, Louis Prima was and will forever be the "wildest" man in show business!
To paraphrase Jason Verlinde: The trumpeter and bandleader was at the forefront of the rock & roll movement, was the epitome of the cool, singing and swinging Italian crooner ("Oh Marie"), and achieved immortality as King Louie in Disney's Jungle Book. But the entertainer also went through five wives, struggled to keep up with new musical trends, and, ultimately, will be remembered as one of the world's great lounge acts.
But the real highlight for Prima fans will be the live music footage, showcasing Smith and Prima singing in their prime, his crackerjack band that knew how to swing, twist, and (yes) rock when it mattered, and Prima's incredible stage presence. No one can ever sum up what makes Prima so magical, but the music speaks for itself.

3rd annual International Maritime Film Festival announces winners, tickets now on sale
|
The 3rd annual International Maritime Film Festival is pleased to announce this year's winning films. The festival runs from
Friday, September 28 through Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the historic Alamo Theatre in downtown Bucksport, Maine.
The Grand Prize winning feature-length film, "Captain of Utopia" by French filmmaker Sarah Del Ben, tells the story of François Bernard, known as “Ben”, who has explored the most remote places of the world for more than 30 years: the North Pole and the South Pole, and Mount Everest. One day, he realized that he was tired of being alone. That is the starting point of his ambitious project: ATKA. For 17 months, the boat traveled on the west coast of Greenland, carrying on board, in turn, personalities from various backgrounds—base jumpers, circus artists, teenagers, sick women and children—to discover the icecap. It is the beginning of an amazing human adventure on how the altruism and the determination of a man can change the life of a hundred others. Critics have called Captain of Utopia, “A deeply moving movie of humanity, bursting with generosity.”
The Runner-Up feature-length prize goes to "Lobster War: The Fight Over The World's Richest Fishing Grounds," a 2018 film by American filmmaker and Boston Globe reporter David Abel. The film is about a climate-fueled conflict between the United States and Canada over waters that both countries have claimed since the end of the Revolutionary War. The disputed 277 square miles of sea, known as the Gray Zone, were traditionally fished by US lobstermen. But as the Gulf of Maine has warmed faster than nearly any other body of water on the planet, the area’s previously modest lobster population has surged. As a result, Canadians have begun to assert their sovereignty, warring with the Americans to claim the bounty.
In the short films category, the Grand Prize is awarded to "Herring Opera," a 2017 film by the American filmmaker Tessa Schmidt. Herring Opera is set in the small coastal town of Sitka, Alaska, where the most dramatic signal of spring is the arrival of the herring. Massive fishing boats arrive from out of town to vie for the "million dollar set," local Alaska natives prepare to harvest herring eggs in the traditional way, and thousands of whales, seals, and eagles crowd the ocean to eat the herring. This short nonfiction film presents all the bustle of springtime in Sitka in an operatic form, using classic opera pieces as a score of this modern but timeless struggle between nature, tradition, and technology.
The Runner-Up prize in the short films category goes to "The Sea Is My Brother" by American filmmakers Shari Rothfarb Mekonen and Avishai Mekonen. This 2018 film follows the fight in Congress of WWII Merchant Marine Veterans who seek justice for being excluded from the GI Bill for the 42 years before they were legally declared veterans in 1988.
Additional films will be screened at the festival as part of the IMFF spotlight series. This year, IMFF is partnering with the Island Institute and the program will include several of their "video postcards" that capture life on Maine's islands as well as examine the impact of climate change on island and coastal life. The 3rd annual IMFF will also include the launch of a new initiative, IMFF: Fresh Takes. Supported by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, IMFF: Fresh Takes will be year long project led by Maine-based film maker Jim Picariello. Beginning this fall, Jim will work with students from Bucksport High School to create films that will be debuted at the 2019 International Maritime Film Festival. The participating students will be introduced at this year's festival and Jim will be on hand to give an exciting preview of the project.
A final program for the 3rd annual IMFF will be announced in late August. Tickets are on sale at the website,

September is Recovery Month
|
Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.
This year's annual theme is: “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.” Healthy Acadia has several awareness events scheduled throughout the month. Please join others in your community in celebrating recovery and learn how you can help others along their recovery journey.
Friday, September 21.Walk for Recovery and Candlelight Vigil, Machias. The walk, hosted by the Washington County Community Action Team and Healthy Acadia, starts at Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce (across from Helen's Restaurant) and goes to Bad Little Falls Park. Lineup is at 5:45pm, the walk starts at 6:00pm. Join us in supporting our community members in recovery, their families, and allies of recovery. Individuals and families are invited share their stories of recovery and to bring photos of loved ones lost to addiction, which can be shared on recovery and remembrance boards. Mainers on the Titanic, Mac Smith

Mac Smith, author of “Mainers on the Titanic,” will speak on his book traces traces the stories of passengers on that fateful ship who had ties to Maine. Many of them were wealthy summer visitors to Mount Desert Island, but there were other residents of the state aboard as well. Their tales are retold in a lively way, along with what was occurring in the state at the time.
Meticulously researched, this book reveals the agonizing day-to-day wait of Mainers for news of what really happened to their loved ones aboard. It also tells the stories of Maine passengers from their boarding to the sinking, rescue, and arrival back in the country, and the stories of those who did not survive. It’s a unique and fascinating addition to the Titanic story and to Maine history.
A Navy veteran of the First Gulf War and former news reporter for the Bar Harbor Times, Smith lives in Stockton Springs, in the village of Sandy Point, where he is restoring the family homestead. This is his first book.
