Greetings from the Head of School
Dr. Rochelle Brand
Head of School

In this week's Parsha, Va'era, we  read about the beginning of the redemption of Bnai Yisrael from Mitzrayim.  The Torah records that Moshe did not unleash the first three plagues. Instead, he relinquished this task to his brother Aharon.  Why is this? Wasn't it Moshe's  mission to lead the Jewish people to freedom,  מעבדות לחרות? Why didn't Moshe initiate the first three plagues on his own just as he initiated the remaining seven makot?

The answer to this question can be summarized in one word in English: Appreciation,  (two words in Hebrew, Hakarat Hatov).  Hashem wanted Moshe wanted to display appreciation to the elements that assisted him in the past. The plague of blood was initiated by hitting the Nile River with a staff. However, these same waters saved Moshe when he was floating in a basket down the Nile just after he was born! This, too, how the maka of frogs was initiated - by hitting the Nile. Likewise, the plague of lice was initiated by striking the ground. But it was the ground that "helped" Moshe by hiding the body of the Egyptian man that he had killed while a prince in Egypt. As such, Moshe delegated the job of unleashing the first three makot to Aharon.

Gratitude is what sustains society and keeps the world turning.  It is a fundamental value in Judaism and one which we seek to  imbue in our children. Every bracha we make, every thanks we state, every move we make should be an expression of true Hakarat Hatov.  If Moshe can show his  appreciation to inanimate objects, how much more so must we show appreciation to human beings (and of course, to Hakadosh Baruch Hu) who have gone out of their way to help us.

This Sunday evening, we will have the opportunity as a school and as individuals to show our appreciation for the work of a few people that benefits so many of us in South Florida.  This year's honorees at our 15th Annual Dinner are the Teach Florida Organization (Community Service Award), Mr. and Mrs. Adam and Perla Pollock (Parents of the Year) and Mrs. Rivkah Bodkins (Educator of the Year). What a wonderful opportunity to show our hakarat hatov to those individuals who have gone לפנים משורת הדין, to ensure the safety and security of our Jewish schools, to allow so many students to receive a superlative yeshiva education, and to enrich our educational opportunities.

Although the ballroom at the Young Israel of Bal Harbour will be filled, there is always room for one or two more!  Please join us this Sunday, January 6th at 7p.m. to demonstrate your appreciation for our school!

Have a beautiful Shabbat,

The students worked in small groups to decipher and try to understand the Ramban's commentary on the Parah Adumah, deepening their knowledge of this important chok. They learned the qualifications of the Parah Adumah and what is added to the burning cow, along with all of the steps of the preparation of the ashes.

G.O. GEMS: Wild West Wednesday

9th Grade Miami Beach Shabbaton

Last Shabbos the Sha'arei Bina 9th grade enjoyed an amazing Shabbos in Miami Beach.  We started Shabbos by davening at Ahavas Torah, had dinner at "the shteibel" where we heard divrei Torah from Eliana Peckman, and enjoyed inspiring words of Torah from Rabbi Shlomo Sprung at a beautiful Oneg hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Rosenbaum.  On Shabbat day we davened and had kiddish at Rabbi Janowski's minyan, heard a shiur from Rebbitzin Chavie Feldbrand, had lunch at the "shteibel" where we heard divrei Torah from Arielle Tempelberg, performed bikur cholim at the hospital with Ricky Turetsky, and enjoyed 3rd meal, games, and divrei Torah by Avigail Levine at the home of Rabbi and Mrs. Wolnerman.

Motzi Shabbos the girls enjoyed pizza and played laser tag - it was an action-packed Shabbos!

A special thank you goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Reich for sponsoring Shabbat dinner and all their efforts behind the scenes helping organize and run the Shabbaton.  Thank you Bibi Bresher for sponsoring Shabbat lunch!  Thank you Mrs. Bodkins and Miss Homnick for all your hard work making this Shabbaton so amazing!
