Rector's Ramblings

Very soon we will be announcing a town hall meeting to share what our architect has presented to the Vestry as a follow-up to our master plan. As this date nears, I thought it would be a good idea to remind us all how we got here. As the months have gone on, I am aware that many of us have forgotten why the Vestry went down this road in the first place, or weren't a part of the congregation when we started. In order to make sure we all have the same basic foundation for interpreting this upcoming presentation, I thought it would be helpful to recap the process that got us here and some of the data that pointed the way.

It was more than two and a half years ago when the Vestry decided to address crowding at the Sunday 9:15 am and Saturday 5:30 pm services. We held town hall meetings in March 2016 to share our concerns and brainstorm solutions. We followed up the town hall meetings with a parish survey that generated almost 300 responses, after which we held another round of town hall meetings. That survey helped us focus on a short-term solution to the problem: adding another service to our schedule. It was the following January that we launched the parish hall service as our fourth Sunday morning service. It was designed to reduce the overcrowding at 9:15, which it has done.  READ MORE HERE.

Watch a video HERE for a more detailed discussion of some of the data included in this week's Rambling.

Worship

X Church
X Church will return to the weekly line-up of Holy Eucharist worship services on Wednesday, October 17, at 6:30 pm, in the historic church. X Church is a service of quiet contemplation, reverence and praise that takes place every week. Join us for this time of peace and reflection in the middle of your busy week.

RenewalWorks

The singular emphasis on love of God and neighbor provides the foundation for RenewalWorks, a ministry in the Episcopal Church that focuses on spiritual growth by deepening love of God and neighbor in the lives of congregations, in the lives of ministries that animate those congregations, and in the lives of the individuals who bring life to those ministries.

We are using the RenewalWorks to evaluate our members and our congregation and make plans for the future.  The first step in this process is the congregational survey. Please take a few minutes out of your schedule to use the link below and answer questions about your spiritual life and your life at Christ Church. We will use this information with a team of parishioners to determine strategies and plans to improve our spiritual vitality. The link can be found here .  Each person in a household over the age of 16 is encouraged to take the survey. If this work sounds interesting to you, and you'd like to be a part of the parish RenewalWorks team, please email Father Tom at [email protected].

Formation

Growing in Our Understanding of Holy Eucharist

Worship is at the heart of all we do in the Episcopal Church. We gather to be renewed in our faith and formed in our life. We take great care with worship, seeking to make it our most excellent offering. But what is it we do when we celebrate the Holy Eucharist and how does it contribute to our spiritual growth? The Eucharist is one of the key catalysts helping people to move into deeper relationship with God and neighbor. We are fed and we grow. Join Father Tom on Wednesday, September 12, 19 and 26, at 5:30 pm in the church to explore this mysterious, holy meal and how we receive strength for the spiritual journey. Please contact Father Tom at [email protected] for more information.

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday morning class will be on hiatus for the next few weeks. Please keep class leader Bob Brown in your prayers as he recovers from surgery. Please contact the office at 912-638-8683 if you would like more information.

Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group, which meets on Wednesdays at 10:30 am in the Youth Room is currently reading  Our Towns: a 100,000 Mile Journey into the Heart of America , by James and Deborah Fallows.  " A vivid, surprising portrait of the civic and economic reinvention taking place in America, town by town and generally out of view of the national media. A realistically positive and provocative view of the country between its coasts.  Books are available in the church office for $21. Please contact Father Tom at  [email protected] , for more information.

Conflict Training

While the majority of us prefer a congenial approach to a day's activities and generally do not seek out quarrels, conflict seems to be a fundamental element in our lives. Everyone is experienced in conflict management, whether we seek it out, simply respond to it when we encounter it, or actively try to avoid it. But just because we encounter conflict does not mean we are trained in how to handle it. Using scripture as a model for conflict transformation, we will explore how Jesus and  the apostles chose to address it. The core message of the scriptures is reconciliation and that is the goal of Christian conflict transformation and the theme of our learning.

Join the group to learn your preferred conflict response style and explore other ways to handle the inevitable bumps in the road. Get hands on, practical training in how to live in peace. The group will meet on Thursdays at 11:00 am, in the Parish Hall for five weeks beginning October 11. For more information, contact Mother Becky at  [email protected] .
