 NATIVI TY CONNECT
September 13, 2018
17th Sunday after Pentecost
9:30 am
Three weeks ago we heard John's gospel's version of Peter's confession of faith. This Sunday we hear Mark's version, when Peter says, "You are the Messiah." In John, the stumbling block is Jesus' invitation to eat his flesh, given for the life of the world. In Mark too the scandal has to do with Jesus' words about his own coming death, and here Peter himself stumbles over Jesus' words. But Jesus is anointed (the meaning of "messiah") in Mark only on the way to the cross (14:3); so we are anointed in baptism with the sign of the cross.

Pastor Brent continues the "Question of the Week" sermon series.  In each Sunday's Gospel from Mark (save one), there are questions...  we'll look at the context, hear the answer, and respond for ourselves in the setting of our life.  This sequence will take us through the end of the church year in November.
Nativity's constitution requires a notice for calling a special Congregational Meeting...here it is! This Sunday, September 16th, at 10:45 am (following worship) we will convene for only 3 agenda items...electing a new Trustee, Steve Olechnowicz, replacing Sandi Reed-Bryant who has moved; extending Pastor Brent's term call through 2019; and receiving the first report of the Task Force considering consolidation possibilities for Messiah and Nativity Lutheran Churches. While the first 2 require action, the 3rd will be a gathering that is meant to share information, questions, and ideas heading toward a resolution to be developed and voted on by the congregations in Advent. See you here on Sunday!
Thanks to all who stayed for last Sunday's   "God's Work Our Hands" project.  We autographed dozens of cards that we hope will give cheer or encouragement to those in hospitals or nursing homes.  They might not recognize our names, but they will know someone is thinking of and praying for them.  Pastor will add his own note, and they will be distributed to chaplains and patients.
Sunday's Givers
Flowers and candles are generously given by the Barron family in honor of Amy's birthday.  We also give thanks to the Gattusos for providing our Fellowship this Sunday!
Enrolling Now!
Sign-ups for flowers, candles, fall fellowship (coffee hour) are available in the Narthex.  Bring a bouquet for flowers or drop $10 in the offering for candles on the Sunday you choose... recognition for each is noted in the Connect.  We need everyone to participate in order to cover the calendar through the end of the year and beyond...

Several Sundays ago Eric Remick gave an impassioned plea for biblical literacy and against all who would publicly play fast and loose with Scripture for their own ends...it met with applause from you!  Now is your chance to take heed by attending a Bible Class he is offering to lead...meeting each Sunday morning at 8:30.  We'll be looking together at  "epochs" from the beginning of the Old Testament...  Creation, Eden, Cain & Abel, and the Flood are included.  This interesting offering gives us a chance to gather, share and speak about how we interpret and understand these stories.   Join Eric as we improve our Biblical understanding and insight!

The Last Word...
Are you looking forward to this Saturday's International Dot Day? Not only were you probably not aware of its imminence, like me you had no idea what the heck this day celebrates! You know what a dot is when you see one, but why set aside a day to observe it? Since you asked...

IDD traces its roots back to September 15th twelve years ago when educator Terry Shay introduced the book entitled "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds to his class...it's the account of a teacher who encourages a doubting student to trust in her own talents and be brave enough to make her mark on the world. This student starts off by making a small dot on a piece of paper and it took her on a journey of self- discovery and cooperation...so a simple speck on a clean canvas led her and her classmates to some terrific writing, drawing, and painting. All it took was a dot to spark creativity that was ignited with a bit of inspiration and some encouragement.

Sometimes (or often) our life can seem empty...void of form and vacant in function. We have a sense there is something there, but we can't imagine the shape nor fathom the significance. So we get stuck...perplexed by the barren landscape and blank space. Worse, we get frustrated and end up with the proverbial pen in hand and can't seem to get started...we might even give up.

Maybe there's a point to be made...literally. Amidst all the white space of your world you begin by making a dot.  Pick a spot...it may be a fleck, a tiny particle, maybe even a blotch. Then inscribe it anywhere...and see what trickle or torrent of ingenuity might carry you downstream. You may be influenced by the confluence of a small work and a genuine need for what you offer...no matter how diminutive or inconsequential it might currently seem. For from small dots can come true treasures with contours and character never before seen. You are a one of a kind work...formed, molded, and sculpted by the very hand of God. God dotes on you! And God anticipates and expects that you might be a medium of your community's appreciation for the fine art of love.

While the word International is in the title, it may as well be intergalactic! This big space was once an empty void...then God shed a pinpoint of light on the subject. The universe is now God's masterpiece. The world was once empty of purpose...and God picked a tiny, no-account place called Bethlehem as the spot for a baby to be born and salvation to enter our realm. This artistry gave birth to the color and content of our hope and our joy. You will always have you, but you shall stand alone... you cannot be together and complete until you dot the i!

We cannot wait so don't hesitate... put a little dash into your dotting!!
