Kings of the Cube
When Lakehill’s new Rubik’s Cube Club meets for the first time on Friday, it will have two avid “Cubers” to thank. “I first saw a kid on a plane solve a Cube, and, immediately, I wanted to know more,” said Lakehill seventh grader Vivek Patel. While he started cubing for fun, Patel now spends thirty minutes a day practicing, and several hours a day on the weekends. His friend, seventh grader Jackson Cook, has also become a Cube enthusiast. They now spend their time searching websites and watching videos to help them learn different patterns and improve.

The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian professor and architect Ernő Rubik. It was immediately popular when it hit shelves worldwide in 1980,quickly becoming the best-selling toy in history. But as the 1980s wore on, the allure of the Rubik’s Cube wore off.

In the early 2000s, however, it began making a comeback. A new generation has embraced the puzzle, and the Rubic's Cube is cool once again.

As cubing has taken off, solve times have dropped. In addition to the classic 3x3 shape, there are 4x4 and 2x2 sizes, and the Pyraminx, a triangle Rubik's Cube. New "speed cubes" look like Rubik’s Cubes, but have high-tech features, like magnets, on the inside to make turning them smoother and faster. Speed cubing - solving the puzzle quickly - is now a competitive sport. The World Cube Association holds tournaments, with tens of thousands of Cube lovers competing in events around the world.

Patel is now taking part in competitions (he’s down to 22 seconds for the 3x3 cube). “It’s really a race against yourself,” he says. “There will always be somebody who is better. The goal is just to improve.”

Both Patel and Cook believe that their cubing is helping to strengthen their minds. “It really helps you focus your brain and improves muscle memory,” says Cook. Sophomore Aron Xiao, who has been cubing as a hobby for three years and started an Upper School club last year, is happy to see more students getting involved. "Cubing is a great way to improve your dexterity and hand-eye coordination, while training your brain to think logically," he says.

"Using a sequential set of operations to solve a problem gets kids thinking algorithmically,” says Jennifer Herta, Lakehill Computer Science Chair. "That is an important skill in science, math, and computer science.”

Delayed gratification may be one of the greatest benefits of the Rubik's Cube. “You have to have a lot of patience and dedication to be successful," says Cook. "There are thousands of algorithms. You just have to spend time every day.”

Coach Jhoana Cayme-Mosley has always been fascinated by the Rubik’s Cube, and finally learned to solve one 10 years ago. “I watched a YouTube video and spent an entire afternoon learning how to solve it,” she said.

“Our students are cerebral, and they love a challenge,” Cayme-Mosley said. “For them, it’s not just about solving the puzzle; it’s about increasing their speed. It’s a much more sophisticated process. The algorithms even have names. The new cubes are built for speed--no more peeling stickers off to rearrange them like before.”

After watching Patel solve a Cube one day, she offered to sponsor a club. The new Rubik’s Cube Club will meet on the first and second Fridays of every month during lunch. The first meeting will be held this Friday, September 14, in Ms. Hauschild’s room. Cubers of all levels are welcome to attend.
Upper School Enjoys Ranch Retreat
On September 7, Upper School students attended the annual Upper School Retreat, an event that encourages bonding between all levels of Upper School, at the Southern Cross Ranch.

That morning, new students and Freshmen were divided into their houses: Blue, Green, and White. Within these houses, students participated in powder puff volleyball and football games, providing the opportunity for them to bond with older students.

Students and teachers enjoyed the barbecue and snow cones offered throughout the day. Overall, the day was a success, allowing both students and faculty to relax and enjoy spending time together outside of classroom.

College Fair Kicks Off Exploration Process
On the morning of September 7, Upper School students attended Lakehill's annual College Fair.

Both underclassmen and upperclassman alike were able to visit with college representatives, enabling students to be introduced to new schools while also practicing communicating with representatives and asking questions. Around thirty colleges attended, including both state and private institutions varying in size and specialties.

Another College Fair will be held October 22, with more colleges and universities in attendance. In addition to the two college fairs, admission officers from more than 110 colleges and universities will visit the Lakehill campus.

Who's New?
Lakehill Welcomes Evelyn Tan
Evelyn Tan  joins the Lakehill faculty this year, teaching  Fifth and Grade Science and a Makerspace elective.

She is also a Sixth Grade Sponsor.

Tan was born in Singapore and now lives in Plano. Prior to Lakehill, she taught middle school science and art in Houston, Texas, as well as science at Collin College in Plano.

After graduating from Plano West Senior High School, Tan earned a B.S. degree in Biology from Louisiana State University, and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from St. Thomas University.

Now in her seventh year of teaching, Tan believes the best part of her day is working with students and teaching a subject that she loves. "I love the enthusiasm of Middle School students and being able to see their excited reactions when they discover something new."

Tan is no stranger to Lakehill. In 2012, she served as a long-term sub for Science Chair Bryna Thomson, who says Tan "works really well with middle school students." Tan has also combined her vast knowledge of science and art to create a variety of popular STEAM offerings for Lakehill's Summer Camps program. Married to Upper School Science teacher, Jeremy Holman, they are parents to one-year-old Oliver, as well as two Lakehill students: Ben, a kindergartner, and Annelise, in third grade. "I love the family feel and sense of community at Lakehill."

While being parents to three young children doesn't allow them much free time, Tan enjoys traveling, with favorite destinations including California and Italy. She loves trying the food of different cultures, and is partial to Chinese, Japanese, and Tex-Mex.

Tan is looking forward to working with Middle School students again and generating excitement about science among her students.

Varsity and JV Volleyball
After a big win last Tuesday over Rockwall Heritage to start district play, both the JV and Varsity teams went back to work against another district rival - Irving the Highlands. JV won in another exciting three-set match. Kathryn Mahan and Liz Blanchard led the way with a strong serving effort in all three sets.

Varsity rolled to an easy straight set victory. The Highlands struggled with their serve receive, and Lakehill took full advantage, racking up a total of 28 aces as a team.

Both teams are now 2-0 in district play.

The girls took on 4A school Colleyville Covenant this past Tuesday with straight-sets victories for both teams. Maya Ariss had some great swings off of Graysen Walker's sets in the JV game.

Despite being down a starter due to illness, the Varsity team did well of adjusting to a new lineup. Tyler McCall led the team in aces and Maddie Cerda led in kills.

The Varsity win marked the 200th victory at Lakehill for Coach Jhoana Cayme-Mosley.

Both teams return to action tonight against district newcomer Texoma Christian. JV will start at 5:00 p.m. and Varsity at 6:00 p.m. Next Tuesday, they will host Dallas Lutheran at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Come out and support your state-ranked Warriors!

Middle School Volleyball
The Middle School Blue team lost to First Baptist Academy on September 11, in an extremely close game (25-23, 25-18). The girls showed improvement in their serves and passing.  Sydney Nguyen had a great passing streak, while Lobna El-Feky and Taylor Allen showed incredible assertiveness throughout the game. The team kept fighting, never giving up.

Both the Blue and Green teams play away Garland Christian on the road on September 13.
