Nurturing Faith Ideas
Nurturing Faith Ideas are weekly suggestions and activities from the Presbytery's Nurture Committee to link worship and home and to nurture faith development in the family. They are intended for all ages and family types. Add one to your bulletin each week or put them in your monthly newsletter. They could also be sent via email or added to a Facebook page. Ideas for the entire year can be found

James 3:1-12 is a warning about our tongues. Words can make people feel good, and words can also make people feel very bad. This week, make a point of using your words to help people feel good.

James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a, we are told to live our lives wisely.
Live well, live wisely, live humbly. It's the way you live your life, not the way you talk, that is important. Part of living wisely, according to James, means getting along with everyone. Sometimes that's hard work, but God wants us to treat each other with dignity and honor. How can you live wisely this week?

The Presbytery will go on a discipleship safari to the Nyeri Presbytery, our sister presbytery in Kenya, Aug. 21-Sept. 2, 2019. Make plans now to join the trip! Maximum cost is $3,000. First payment should be made by Oct. 1.

Rev. Alex Awad, an International Peacemaker from Palestine, will be visiting West Virginia Sept. 22-27. He will participate in events in Elkins, the Kanawha Valley, Huntington, Morgantown and Bridgeport; all are free and most are open to the public. This fall, the Presbytery will offer to all churches (particularly those who do not have pastoral leadership)
Ruling Elder training for presiding at the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. The four-hour event will be held in Bridgeport, Elkins and Scott Depot on Sept. 23; Lewisburg and Oak Hill on Oct. 7, and
Parkersburg and Gilbert on Oct. 14. Registration is one week in advance of each event, making Monday the deadline for the Sept. 23 events.

 Presby Prep course in October
Would you like to know more about what we believe as Presbyterians who share in the Reformed Tradition? The Reformed Theology course of Presby Prep will provide you an opportunity to do so. It's offered three Saturdays, each in a different city; you choose your location. Cost is $10, with registration due by Sept. 27.

 Do you preach every week? Once a month? Once a year? It doesn't matter. If you preach at all, this course if for you! Richard Voelz, Assistant Professor of Preaching and Worship at Union Presbyterian Seminary, will lead this final 2018 Expanding Your Ministry Toolbox course. Cost is $75. Registration deadline is Oct. 15.

2018 Older Youth Retreat
Nov. 16-18 at Bluestone
Jen Evans, Associate Pastor for Youth, Young Adult and Families with Children Ministries at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, AR, will lead this retreat for youth in grades 9-12 and adult advisors/chaperones. Throughout the weekend, we will explore what encourages us in our faith and recharges our batteries of faith. Information has also been sent to congregational leaders by email and can be found on the website. Sympathy
Jeanne Hamilton, a ruling elder and Presbyterian Women moderator at Old Stone Presbyterian Church, passed away Sept. 6 at her home in Lewisburg. She was 95.

Jenka Lockwood, clerk of session at Second Presbyterian Church in Huntington, has been moved to the Shepherd Center, a spinal rehabilitation center in Atlanta, following the serious car accident she was in on Aug. 1. Charles "Rab" Snider, treasurer and a ruling elder at Fleming Memorial Presbyterian Church in Fairmont, had kidney surgery earlier this week and is recovering. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

 Westminster Foundation of WV celebrates Rev. Dr. Shelly Barrick Parsons in her 15th year of ministry. Shelly was ordained in August 2003 in the Presbytery of New Hope and started her call at West Virginia University as Presbyterian Campus Pastor on Sept. 1, 2003. In addition to that primary call, she is a lecturer in WVU's Department of Religious Studies, the Executive Director of the Harless Center, and Director of WVU Campus Ministry.

 Highlawn Presbyterian, Huntington celebrates Rick Wilson as he retires
On Sunday, Sept. 30, Rev. Rick Wilson will conclude his ministry with Highlawn Presbyterian Church in Huntington. He has been pastor at the church for the past eight years.

Old Stone Presbyterian celebrates its 235th anniversary

WV Council of Churches Annual Assembly

The Evolving Faith conference is sold out, but all general sessions, including keynote speakers and panel discussions, are being recorded. "The Best of Times: God's Call in the Third Thirty of Life" is the theme of this one-day event at the Worthington Presbyterian Church. Sponsored by several presbyteries and the Presbyterian Older Adult Ministry Network, it will feature a keynote, worship, inspiring and thought-provoking workshops, fellowship and food.

This continuing education opportunity centered on Bowen Family Systems Theory is composed of eight one-day seminars (once a month except December) that are either full day in person at Methodist Theological School in central Ohio or half day online. Cost is $1,050, with $100 due at enrollment and the balance due by the September ($450) and January ($500) seminars.
