VIDEO: Cordova High remembers 9/11 victims with flag tribute
The AF JROTC Color Guard and Cadets at Cordova High paid tribute to the victims who lost their lives 17 years ago in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Students and staff at Cordova High participated in honoring the victims in a moment of silence and tribute ceremony. Color Guard members raised to half-staff an American Flag with 3,000 names of those that perished in the attacks.

Master Sgt. Phil Magreevy, who teaches the JROTC class at Cordova High, addressed students and staff, pointing out the fact that many students were not even born when the attack happened 17 years ago. He discussed the importance of continuing to honor and remember the victims.

VIDEO: Attendance matters, and absences add up!
Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success-both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior and have a better chance of graduating from high school.

When students are absent for fewer days, their grades and reading skills often improve - even among those students who are struggling in school. But when kids are absent for an average of just two days of school per month - even when the absences are excused - it can have a negative impact. These absences can affect kids as early as Kindergarten.

  • In the elementary years, children who miss school are more likely to struggle academically and in later years, to dropout entirely.
  • In the secondary years, attendance is the No. 1 predictor of dropout and graduation rates.
  • Attendance is a top indicator of being on track for graduation and for college and career readiness.
  • Nearly 67% of course failures were attributed to absenteeism.

It's more than a meal: It's more resources for your school
At many of our Folsom Cordova schools, we're asking our families to apply for Free and Reduced Meals - even if they're not sure they'll use them.

Why? Because it turns out those applications could increase the amount of money your school receives to pay for resources that help students: academic coaches, technology, musical instruments, field trips and more!

Schools receive more money and resources based on the number of families who qualify for free and reduced meals - regardless of whether they decide to use the program.

Watch this video to learn more . Visit www.fcusd.org/mealapps to see income eligibility, and click here to apply online in the privacy of your home - no need to bring a paper form to school!

Important note:   Families in the following schools DO NOT need to fill out a meal application (for school funding purposes, families at these schools MUST complete alternative income verification forms):
  • Cordova Gardens Elementary
  • Cordova Meadows Elementary
  • Cordova Villa Elementary
  • Kinney High School
  • Mills Middle School
  • Peter J. Shields Elementary
  • Prospect Community Day School
  • Rancho Cordova Elementary
  • White Rock Elementary
  • Williamson Elementary

Michelle is among those honored in the 2018 Every Student Succeeding program sponsored by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA).

Michelle was nominated by her teacher Jessica Cisneros-Elliott for overcoming a series of personal obstacles including bullying, a health crisis, and victimization by an internship supervisor during her pathway to success.

Students will be honored at ACSA's Leadership Summit in November. Her nomination was supported by ACSA's Region 3, which represents 21 school districts in Sacramento and Yolo counties.
