We hope you all had a relaxing Christmas break. This month we're back with contemporary music news from the past month as well as a preview of some exciting events happening in January!

IAN WILSON RECEIVES MAJOR INDIVIDUAL AWARD FROM THE ARTS COUNCIL OF NORTHERN IRELAND  

Composer Ian Wilson has been announced as one of the artists who has been presented with a Major Individual Award from the Arts Council Northern Ireland, the highest honour given by the arts development and funding agency.
The awards are given in recognition of the contribution an artist has made to creative life in Ireland. Ian Wilson joins a list of composers who previously benefited from the award, including Elaine Agnew and Deirdre McKay, among others. Read our online promotion guidelines, which outline the online promotion and support we provide to events and projects external to CMC, as well as the information that needs to be supplied in advance to our promotion and development department to avail of this service. 

FIDELIO TRIO WINTER CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL 
The Fidelio Trio Chamber Winter Music Festival took place from the 2-4 December 2016  at St Patrick's College, DCU Drumcondra and as with previous editions of the festival, Irish composers were well represented throughout the weekend.  Watch Fidelio trio violinist  Darragh Morgan, composers  Rhona Clarke and Ann Cleare speak about the new works which were programmed for the festival in a short video feature on our website. 

  CHORAL SKETCHES PUBLIC WORKSHOP 24 FEBRUARY 2017 

Chamber Choir Ireland and the Contemporary Music Centre have partnered to present Choral Sketches, a unique opportunity for composers wishing to develop their skills in writing choral music with mentoring from renowned composer Tarik O'Regan. Composers Amanda Feery, Michael Gallen and Seán Doherty have been selected to participate in the project, leading to the development of a series of compositional sketches for a new choral work. These sketches will be the focus of a free public workshop led by Tarik O'Regan with Chamber Choir Ireland and Artistic Director, Paul Hillier on 24 February, 2017 in the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin at 5pm. This workshop is a must for anyone with an interest in the processes involved in the creative processes of new choral works. Read more

CMC WELCOMES NEW COMPOSERS FOR 2016 

CMC is pleased to announce that eight new composers have been accepted for representation in the 2016 year. Michael Gallen, Barry O'Halpin, Robert Coleman, Hilary Mullaney, Niall Vallely, Daniel McDermott, Garth Knox and Eoin Callery successfully applied for representation over two assessment periods in 2016. CMC warmly welcomes our new composers to the organisation and we look forward to working on new projects and professional development opportunities with our all of our 200+ registered composers throughout the new year.

CD LAUNCH: INNISFAIL BY RYAN MOLLOY    
Sunday 15 January 2017, 12 Noon, Hugh Lane Gallery, Charlemont House, Parnell Square, Dublin 1 
Composer Ryan Molloy launches a new album of piano works as part of Hugh Lane Gallery's regular Sundays@Noon series. Award winning pianist Alexander Bernstein will perform the CD's featured work Innisfail alongside Lizst's Sonata in B mino r. The CD will be launched by RTÉ Lyric FM's Ellen Cranitch and is open to all to attend. You can also listen to an interview with Ryan about how the CD release came about here.    

CHORAL MUSIC IN IRELAND: HISTORY AND EVOLUTION LECTURE SERIES
Tuesday 17 Jan 2017 - Tuesday 21 Feb 2017, 1.10pm, Kevin Barry Room, National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2
Chamber Choir Ireland, will host a series of Tuesday lunchtime lectures in January and February 2017. Curated by Stuart Kinsella, the series will explore the Chamber Choir's history and origin by looking at the tradition of choral music in Ireland, amateur and professional, both at home and within a wider European context, and may be of interest to those involved in contemporary choral composition, performance or research.
