CrimeStoppers tips keep the heat
on the trail of plenty of local felons
The hot month of August, 2018 saw the usual number of summer time criminal acts in Memphis and Shelby County. Fortunately, citizens who keep their eyes watching (and ears listening) contacted CrimeStoppers with information that helped break numerous cases wide open.

Twenty-two tips helped investigators resolve cases involving aggravated burglaries and assaults, a carjacking, one homicide and three attempted homicides, one count of statutory rape and a particularly cruel incident in which an individual was charged with multiple counts of child abuse, adult abuse and animal abuse.

The helpful anonymous information for the entire month led to the awarding of $11,000 in cash payments to citizen tipsters.

Thanks to 10 tips, police received enough information to develop a case against felons in numerous robberies, burglaries and assaults.

Most of the time, existing security video footage helped. The video images were captured, placed on news media and social media and then passed forward countless times by individuals to their friends and neighbors - another example of the difference security cameras can make in solving crimes.

Twelve tips helped police locate fugitives who had been identified but not found by authorities.

One of those covered an October, 2017 shooting and attempted murder. Police had developed Reginald McFarland as a suspect but had no idea where he was hiding. A tipster provided the answer on August 4, 2018 - 10 months later.

2 nd annual CrimeStoppers golf tourney
helps keep crime-fighting efforts going

The Phelps Security CrimeStoppers Golf Tournament, 2018 edition, was a great success, bringing in more than $20,000 to the bank account from which CrimeStoppers' citizen board members can make cash awards for successful citizen tips.

CrimeStoppers can't say enough about our great sponsors and wonderful volunteers who work hard to put on the tournament.

The tournament was held August 6 at the Tournament Players Club Southwind course. On a breezy and sunny day, 88 players on 22 teams competed. This video captures the event nicely.

The tournament's success was largely thanks to the 20 sponsors who provided donations. Many thanks to tournament coordinator and CrimeStoppers board member Gary Paulson, and all the volunteers who kept the event on schedule.
