Sights and sounds around Orangetown for the week of July 24, 2020
Good Afternoon All -

There were a few exciting things going on around Orangetown this week. I have incorporated a few of them in this newsletter. Filming has begun, Pfizer made a huge announcement, a few girl scouts dropped by and we got a private tour of Camp Shanks - who are hoping to open up as soon as possible.

Save the Date - Saturday, August 1st for street dining and shopping. I look forward to seeing everyone out on Central Avenue a week today.

Keep on washing those hands and maintaining social distance when possible.

Supervisor Teresa M. Kenny  joined Rockland County Executive Ed Day on his announcement regarding Pfizer's news.

Pfizer announced that the  U.S. Department of Health and Human Services  placed a $ 1.95 billion initial order for 100 million doses of an mRNA-based vaccine against COVID-19 (following  U.S. Food and Drug Administration  authorization or approval.)

Great news for Orangetown (as well as the rest of the World!)

Filming is back!
Deputy Supervisor Michael Lawler stopped over at the filming of a Butterfinger commercial this past week. He brought munchkins and coffee for the crew. He is with Ko Niizuma, set location manager.

We in Orangetown are very excited about working with the filming industry again. Just another sign that we are emerging from this world wide pandemic.

Camp Shanks Museum

The Camp Shanks Museum commemorates the military facility that served as the largest point of embarkation for soldiers headed for the front lines in North Africa and Europe during World War II, including the landing forces for the D-Day invasion.

Opened in 1942, Camp Shanks contained 1,500 barracks, mess halls, theaters, a hospital, and other buildings where some 1.5 million G.I.s (approximately 40,000 a month) were issued combat equipment and underwent final inspections before shipping overseas. Most soldiers spent eight to 12 days at the self-supporting complex dubbed “Last Stop, U.S.A.” Located in a simulated barracks, the museum contains artifacts and photographs that recount the history of Camp Shanks and describe the everyday life of male and female soldiers at the facility.
