Back to School: Temporary Crosswalk on Leafwood Avenue
Novato's youth is back at school: please be mindful when driving near schools and crosswalks. In late-August, Novato Public Works crews installed a temporary crosswalk near the side entrance of Lynwood School to serve students and parents this school year. In partnership with the City, Lynwood School teachers have conveyed crosswalk safety tips with students.

We are currently working to design and install a new permanent crosswalk at this location by spring 2019.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Novato Public Works at 415.899.8246 or [email protected].

New Shaded Bench
Creation of Accessible Walkway

Dogbone Meadow Dog Park closed on July 30 and is undergoing an estimated three-month improvement project. The project's primary focus is to improve site accessibility, improve irrigation and replace one acre of turf. Other upgrades include a dog wash area, and the addition of benches and shaded areas.

The contractor has made excellent progress so far. Public Works reports that concrete work (pedestrian path and pads for benches and picnic tables) is near completion, irrigation is being installed, benches have been delivered, and fence posts placed. Site grading continues and soil amendment for future turf is soon to begin.

We know Dogbone Meadow's humans and dogs are looking forward to their new and improved park! Detailed information about the project is available at novato.org/dogparkimprovements.

SMART Celebrates First Year of Service

Last month, SMART celebrated its first year of service by inviting the community to SMARTFest.

The free festival was held at Novato's own Hamilton Station! Community members came from all over the North Bay to celebrate and enjoy live music, food trucks, activities for kids and more.

SMART began passenger rail service in the North Bay in August 2017, and since opening its doors, has carried more that 630,000 passengers. The system currently covers 43 miles from Santa Rosa to downtown San Rafael. There are currently two SMART stations in Novato, San Marin and Hamilton, with a third station in Downtown Novato expected to be completed by late 2019.

More info about SMART is available at SonomaMarinTrain.org.

Now Accepting Proposals for Historic Train Depot & Site
We're excited to announce an opportunity to submit proposals on the city-owned Historic Train Depot and Site, located at 695 Grant Avenue in Downtown Novato. Proposals are due by close of business on Monday, October 1, 2018.

Any reuse/redevelopment of this site will occur only after comprehensive public engagement process, environmental review and noticed public hearings. A community workshop/open house is planned for the October/November timeframe after proposals are received.

City-owned Properties Now Glyphosate-Free
The City has updated its Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan to eliminate the use of Glyphosate (sold as Round-Up) to control weeds on City-owned parks, streets, sidewalks and medians. City maintenance staff are now using manual removal, mulching and other practices that are better for the environment, but that are more labor-intensive. Maintenance staff are also reevaluating traditional plantings in favor of low-maintenance, low-water landscaping. For example, planting alternate ground covers that can out-compete weeds and/or using deep mulch cover as a weed deterrent.

Annual weeds are prolific throughout Novato and Marin County. The City is actively seeking volunteers to help pull weeds in parks, medians, and other publicly-owned spaces. If you are interested in volunteering with the Novato Streetscape Committee or would like more information about the City's pest management practices, please email [email protected] or call 415.899.8280.

Team Up to Clean Up!
Team Up to Clean Up
A Team Up to Clean Up Volunteer Crew

On the first Saturday of each month, a stalwart group of Novato volunteers gather at a pre-determined location in Novato to pick up litter. Their grassroots effort started with a small group in October 2017. So far, during eight cleanups, over 60 volunteers have participated in collecting 39 large bags of trash, while logging a combined total of 105 hours. Kudos and many thanks to Novato residents Marcia Basalla, Virginia Hanna, and Joni De Gabriel for creating  Team Up to Clean Up , in partnership with the Novato Streetscape Committee.

More volunteers are welcome and needed! Joining Team Up to Clean Up is a way for students to earn community service hours and for anyone else who wants to help our community. We know a lot of you are already doing your part to clean up Novato! If you'd like to join a team and get details on the October 6th clean up, email Marcia Basalla at  [email protected].

Novato Boulevard Improvements
Proposed Three-Lane Option
On June 12, Novato City Council selected and approved a new three-lane layout for the Novato Blvd. Improvements Project between Diablo and Grant Avenues.  Improvements are needed to enable the roadway and intersections to operate more efficiently and for safety and usability for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The City has filed a new "Notice of Preparation" of Environmental Impact Report (EIR) under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).  As a part of this process, the City requests public comment on the scope and content of the environmental information to be included in the project EIR.  The public comment period closes on September 21, 2018 at 5:00pm.
