It is Kent Tritle, organist, who is showcased this summer - he plays the last of a series of performances of the Saint-Saëns "Organ Symphony" with the New York Philharmonic at the
Bravo! Vail festival this weekend (Sunday), and next week plays two recitals in Germany, at
Erl
ö
serkirche in Munich and
Himmerod Abbey in Grosslittgen...if you happen to be in the neighborhood!
And on August 5, he plays a recital at
Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa, next door to his hometown of Spirit Lake. This church's organ is one that a young Kent dreamed of playing: "It seemed like the Valhalla of organ pilgrimage to me - you see, Spencer had 10,000 inhabitants, while Spirit Lake had about 2,500. It was a real pipe organ of some size, even larger than the organ in our local Lutheran church, and my home church, where I played, had an electronic organ. But I still have never played that instrument, and I'm very much looking forward to fulfilling a late childhood dream this August!"
Tickets are on sale now for the major events of Kent's 2018-19 season! Read on (and see the schedule below for ticket links):
- Musica Sacra's season features signature Baroque repertoire as well as a program of Byrd, Whitacre, Paulus, and the world premiere of a work by Michael Gilbertson, along with its acclaimed annual presentation of Handel's Messiah. The group also participates in live score performances of 2001: A Space Odyssey with the New York Philharmonic (a repeat collaboration) and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
- The Carnegie Hall season of the Oratorio Society of New York is expanding from three to four concerts, which will include Kullervo, the rarely-performed symphonic poem by Sibelius, Szymanowski's Stabat Mater on a program marking the centennial year of WWI Armistice and Polish independence, its beloved rendition of Handel's Messiah, and the mighty Verdi Requiem.
- Concerts by the Cathedral Choir of St. John the Divine feature the choir's continued collaboration with early/world music ensemble Rose of the Compass, this year a concert marking the centennial of the WWI Armistice and Armenian independence, as well as a program of French masters Fauré and Poulenc.
- As part of his season as Director of Choral Activities at the Manhattan School of Music, Kent shares a choral program with Associate Director Ronnie Oliver and two of the program's graduate conductors in the school's newly-renovated Neidorff-Karpati Hall.
Among the singers featured on Kent's programs this season are some of his favorite soloists, including sopranos Susanna Phillips, Kathryn Lewek, Jennifer Zetlan and Leslie Fagan, countertenor Daniel Moody, tenor Brian Giebler, baritones Jesse Blumberg, John Brancy, and Takaoki Onishi, and basses Joseph Beutel and Adam Lau; and recent returning collaborators soprano Elizabeth de Trejo, mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis and tenor Joshua Blue. Soloists with whom Kent will be working with for the first time are soprano Johanna Rusanen-Kartano (in Sibelius's Kullervo), mezzo-soprano Ewa Plonka (in Szymanowski's Stabat Mater), and tenor Isaiah Bell (OSNY's Messiah).
