Amazon generously donated 550 smoke detectors and smoke/carbon monoxide detectors to the City of Moreno Valley Fire Explorers to help encourage residents to install these life-saving devices.

The smoke detectors will be given out to members of the public at the City of Moreno Valley’s 2017 Public Safety Expo on Saturday, April 1 at the Civic Center.

“Smoke alarms are a key part of home fire safety,” said Moreno Valley City Fire Marshal Adria Reinertson. “When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.”

Reinertson encouraged residents to install smoke alarms inside and outside each bedroom and sleeping area and on every floor. She also encouraged residents to test all smoke alarms at least once a month.

The smoke detector donation is the latest way Amazon, which operates a 1.25 million square-foot fulfillment center in Moreno Valley, has given back to the City and its residents. Amazon volunteers recently helped to give kennels at the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter a facelift with a fresh coat of paint and surprised students and staff at Edgemont Elementary School with a delivery of more than $15,000 in much needed supplies, including audio visual equipment that will be used to teach students how a newsroom operates.

City of Moreno Valley Building & Safety Supervisor Nick Henderson received the CALBO Training Institute’s (CTI) Course Development Merit Award for creating and teaching the CTI course “Practical Residential Inspection” at the 2017 California Building Officials (CALBO) Annual Business Meeting.

Henderson created the course to assist inspectors in all aspects of residential inspection including an in-depth look at single family dwellings from foundation to finished product. 

A graduate of the California Building Officials Leadership Academy (BOLA), Henderson is an accomplished guest speaker for the BOLA program.  He is a member of the CALBO Emergency Preparedness Committee and serves as secretary for the International Code Council’s Citrus Belt Chapter.

Henderson’s extensive experience in the construction and inspection industry combined with his commitment and dedication to Building Code education and compliance makes him a valuable asset to the City and its residents.

The City of Moreno Valley hosted its first Telephone Town Hall on Wednesday, March 29.

Instead of asking residents to attend a meeting after a long day of work and family commitments, the Telephone Town Hall brought the meeting to their living rooms, cars or wherever they happen to be.

Using a talk-radio format, Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez answered questions from residents about everything from potholes and policing to fence regulations and speed limits during the hour-long call. Callers had the opportunity to listen to the conversation for as long as they liked. 

The Telephone Town Hall was broadcast simultaneously in English and Spanish. 

Callers who weren't able to ask a question before the call ended had the opportunity to leave messages with their question along with their contact information.

City staff will follow up with those callers to answer their questions or respond to their concerns. In fact, a pothole which was the subject of a caller's complaint was repaired the very next morning.

Moreno Valley Police Officer Art Rodriguez and McGruff the Crime Dog  were proud to join local firefighters, teachers, fitness trainers, fashion designers, and various other community professionals at Excel Prep Charter School’s Career Day.

The event gave students a chance to learn about different career paths available to them and encouraged them to begin thinking about their future goals.

Along with other community programs our local officers participate in, working with our youth provides valuable opportunities for interaction, questions, and most importantly building relations with the next generation.

Public Works Director/City Engineer Ahmad Ansari and Land Development Division Manager Michael Lloyd represented the City of Moreno Valley at the League of California Cities' Public Works Officers Institute this week.

The Institute is a yearly meeting in which public works officers meet to discuss current trends and upcoming opportunities regarding transportation, infrastructure, and stormwater management. 

Topics of interest at this year's summit included:

• Enhanced Infrastructure Financing Districts
• Highway Safety Improvement Program
• Public Works Financing
• Local Highway Bridge Program
• Funding Stormwater Trash Capture
• Succession Planning
• Role of Social Media/Public Relations
• State of California Roadway Pavement Condition

There was also a lot of conversation regarding support for Assembly Bill 1 and Senate Bill 1 to approve additional transportation funding for much needed roadway repair and maintenance across California.

The City of Moreno Valley is supporting passage of both bills which would provide the City and Riverside County significant funding to address needed road repairs and maintenance.

By participating in the Municipal Bond Market, the City has agreed to provide investors with regular financial and demographic data updates within time frames established in the bond documents.

The City has completed its current reporting requirements for fiscal year 2015/16 with the filing of the Annual Reports and the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).

This data is available for public review on the Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA) web portal. This is the centralized portal maintained by the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (MSRB) where all municipal issuers are required to post information on their bonds.
