Amigos Bravos is happy to announce the hiring of Ben Mortensen as Projects Associate on January 2, 2018.
Ben is responsible for a broad variety of duties including assisting project staff on project activities, development and grant writing, administrative duties, and assisting other staff in cultivating and managing an active and engaged membership base; and assisting with outreach activities and events.
Ben completed his BA in Environmental Planning from the University of New Mexico where he focused on watershed management and minored in Sustainability Studies.
An avid outdoorsman, Ben enjoys snowboarding, biking, fly-fishing, backpacking and camping
in his spare time.

Make a Difference and Make Some Money
Amigos Bravos Needs Contractors for
On-the-Ground Restoration Work in the Carson National Forest
Amigos Bravos has recently received a grant from the Rio Grande Water Fund (RGWF). These funds will support the La Jara Wetland Jewel Restoration Project, located in the headwaters of the Rio Fernando de Taos. Amigos Bravos is hiring three contractors to do on-the-ground restoration work for the following projects (Click on the links below for additional RFP details):
Amigos Bravos staff will review and rank the submitted proposals and develop and finalize contracts so that, weather permitting, work can begin on or before June 1, 2018.

A Pre-Bid Site Visit for potential contractors will be held at
the
worksite
on March 5th to clarify expectations and the scope of work, in order to receive the most accurate bids possible. The meeting for the Fencing Contractors will start at 1 pm. The meeting for Headcut Repair and Wetland Assessment and Restoration Inventory Contractors will begin at 2pm
.

Public Meetings for the Rio Fernando Watershed Planning Process
People have a right to clean, non-contaminated water. Yet challenges such as drought, depleted aquifers, and contamination from leaking septic systems and toxic waste are threatening this basic right to life.
Taos County residents are invited to a series of free public meetings regarding the Rio Fernando de Taos Watershed Based Planning Process to address the health of the Rio Fernando River, which flows through the heart of Taos. Focused on the E. coli water quality impairment on the Rio Fernando, this project is led by Amigos Bravos and the New Mexico Environment Department.
These meetings will provide an opportunity to learn about current water quality on the Rio Fernando de Taos and to provide input to the Watershed Based Planning process.

A Victory for Public Participation
and Clean Water
Communities for Clean Water (CCW), a coalition of six organizations, of which Amigos Bravos is a founding member, recently sued the Groundwater Quality Bureau of the New Mexico Environmental Department for denying a public hearing regarding a discharge permit application submitted by Los Alamos National Labs.
On December 28, 2017, the New Mexico Court of Appeals sent a stinging rebuke to the Water Quality Control Commission regarding its decision to uphold the New Mexico Environmental Department's denial of a public hearing requested by CCW as part of a groundwater discharge permit process for the Department of Energy/Los Alamos National Security.
"The ruling is a great victory for clean water and the people of New Mexico", said Rachel Conn, Projects Director for Amigos Bravos. "The court has ensured that the public's concerns must be heard before discharges of pollution into New Mexico's waters are authorized."

Events
The National Wild and Scenic Rivers system was created by Congress in October of 1968 to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations. There are many such rivers all over the west, including in New Mexico.
Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the legislation designating these rivers. To celebrate the many Wild & Scenic rivers, trails, and adventures around Taos, the community is coming together to promote "Wild & Scenic: The Taos Experience."
A number of fun events are planned -- educational, recreational, and artistic. Stay tuned for more information about these events, including a new "Adventure Challenge", BLM tours, a Paint-a-Thon, NeoRio, and the 2nd Annual Amigos Bravos' Rally for the Rio on September 29, 2018!
