INPUT INTO COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO SENIORS INCLUSION

ESCC would like to hear your thoughts on how our community could prevent and overcome social isolation for seniors by focusing on inclusion and engagement.

The federal government recently issued a Call for Concepts for the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) Pan-Canadian projects and ESCC intends to submit a proposal. We invite you to provide your input as we develop a collaborative concept.

We have drafted an initial concept plan and a planned process for submission to share with all interested stakeholders in preparation for the development of a final concept proposal. We encourage as many people as possible to offer ideas and suggestions on how our community could be more inclusive for seniors and provide more opportunities for their engagement by midnight on January 6 via:

VITAL TOPIC: SENIOR WOMEN
Edmonton Community Foundation and Edmonton Social Planning Council

Did you know that 55.6% of seniors in Edmonton are women and that part-time work is more common among senior women? The most recent Vital Topic released as part of Edmonton Vital Signs focuses on Senior Women. The document provides a snapshot of information such as income, living arrangements, health and wellness, and engagement and social isolation.
FINANCIAL LITERACY WORKSHOPS

Each One, Teach One (EOTO) workshops provide financial education to community members who are financially vulnerable and helps build their knowledge, skills and confidence to make the right financial decisions for themselves.

The workshops are delivered by trained professionals from financial institutions. EOTO workshops are run in partnership with community service organizations and can be designed for groups as small as seven people or as large as 20. Workshops are free and take 60 to 90 minutes to deliver, depending on the topic. Review the information sheet for details on the topics.

TAKE BACK AGING: POWER, CRITIQUE, IMAGINATION

This is a joint international conference of the North American and European Networks in Aging Studies hosted by the Trent Centre for Aging & Society. 

The conference invites researchers, writers, and scholars from all disciplines and at every career stage to share their diverse approaches to conventional fields of gerontology and critical aging studies. Organizers wish to encourage new insights into assumed styles of life and thought, imaginative reflections on the meanings and representations of aging, challenging perspectives from cross-cultural and global experience, and activist strategies to take back aging from those powers and practices that relegate it to the margins of social existence and citizenship.

South East Edmonton Seniors Association (SEESA)

SEESA is searching for an experienced, reliable and task-oriented Home Supports Coordinator. This position is responsible for developing/delivering the Edmonton Seniors Home Supports Program. 

Responsibilities include developing and implementing a plan for providing excellent customer service, innovation in service delivery and communicating with community partners. This includes working with contracted companies and community groups, clubs and community leagues. Day-to-day operations could include office volunteer training and supervision, handling calls when volunteers are not available and/or there is a heavy work load and problem solving as required.

Quilling is an art form that involves the use of rolling, shaping and gluing strips of paper to create decorative designs. French and Italian nuns and monks used quilling to decorate book covers and religious items. In the 18th century, quilling became favored by European "ladies of leisure". Today it is becoming popular due to the simplicity of techniques and the low cost of materials. The first hour of the January 17 class will be a demonstration. Call 587-987-3200 for more information.

In this course you will learn basic speechreading (lip reading) plus strategies to communicate better, and get information on hearing aids, technology, tinnitus, and other subjects of interest to the hard of hearing. You'll also meet others who share your challenges and are determined to do something about them.
