Every once in a while, I want to give our membership a look under the hood of the ACPE operations. My hope is that it provides you with a better sense of why we're doing some of what we're doing, and how it shapes our goals and planning for the future.
In the last few years, we have worked diligently to become more "data intelligent." I'm sure many of you have heard about the role of "big data" and its impact on the corporate world. We live in something more like "little data," i.e. the information we gather about members, their needs and their use of technological tools.

On October 10th, in accordance with its bylaws, ACPE emailed ballots to eligible voters to elect members of the Board of Directors, Accreditation Commission, Certification Commission, Professional Ethics Commission, Finance Committee, and Leadership Development Committee.

Over the last year, Wendy Cadge, Professor in the Department of Sociology at Brandeis University, has led an effort to bring together chaplains across all of the different contexts in which they serve. Wendy is an expert in contemporary American religion, especially related to religion in public institutions, religious diversity, religion and immigration, and religious and moral aspects of healthcare. ACPE partnered with her and many others on Transforming Chaplaincy, a think-tank with a mission to promote research literacy in chaplaincy to improve patient outcomes.
With Transforming Chaplaincy completing its work in June 2019, Wendy and our colleagues have worked to identify what the next step will be for the profession. ACPE is a proud supporter and partner of the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab. This article from "America" provides an excellent overview of where we are, what the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab hopes to do, and where we are headed.

"This photo is of Henry Uy, long time ACPE supervisor in the Dayton area. Henry is originally from the Philippines. He and I met and trained together at St. Luke's in Houston in an intern year in the program headed by the late, great Armen Jorjorian. I'm not sure what the occasion was, but given the flower lei around his neck, it was possibly at a meeting in San Diego or Hawaii."

The American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC) and ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education (ACPE) are pleased to announce we have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to become one organization in 2019. A copy of the LOI is available here.
A few weeks ago, ACPE Chair Amy Greene and AAPC President Tere Tyner Canzoneri sent letters to their respective memberships to inform them of conversations that began several months ago when AAPC struggled to come to terms with persistent budget shortfalls.

The ACPE Research Committee invites applications to present research posters at the 2019 ACPE Annual Conference on May 8-10 in Scottsdale, AZ. Applications will be reviewed by the Research Committee and selections will be made by the following criteria:

Now that we are well into the New Certification Process, we have recognized that it is not only possible, but maybe even preferable, for candidates who are in the Old Process to transition to the New Process. While the Certification Commission previously stated that those who achieved candidacy had the choice of transitioning to the New Process, the pathway wasn't as clear as it is now, so we are once again presenting candidates with an opportunity to transition to the New Process.

Over the past few months, we held our first two training cohorts and now have 25 trained Theory Integration Presentation Mentors. As we know our numbers of CECs will continue to grow, we have scheduled our next four cohort groups so that we can train a sufficient number of mentors. If you are interested in becoming a Theory Integration Presentation Mentor, please click here to complete the sign up and indicate which training cohort will work best in your schedule. Go inside a stone
That would be my way.
Let somebody else become a dove
Or gnash with a tiger's tooth.
I am happy to be a stone.
From the outside the stone is a riddle:
No one knows how to answer it.
Yet within, it must be cool and quiet

- Please join in celebrating with the Rev. Dr. Urias Beverly in his retirement from Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit. He and his wife, Dr. Billie Beverly, were feted by family, work and ministry associates, and friends on October 6. Steve Ivy represented ACPE and offered congratulatory remarks. Urias served ACPE in many capacities, including as President from 1994-95 and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2017.
- The Rev. Dr. Delois Brown-Daniels will be the speaker for the Alumni/ae Luncheon. Delois Brown-Daniels is a Distinguished Alumna and will receive the 2018 Award during McCormick Days, October 18 and 19. The award is presented annually to a graduate whose life, ministry, and values embody McCormick's mission to prepare women and men for the work of God's justice, reconciliation, and peace in the world.
- Congratulations to Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS) on receiving a grant of $1 million over five years to help establish Thriving in Ministry at CTS.
- Congratulations to Seminary of the Southwest on receiving a grant of nearly $1 million to help establish the Thriving in Bi-Vocational Ministry initiative.
