Coloradans Against Auto Theft & Law Enforcement Unveil "Kilo Car" on March 1

STATEWIDE (Feb. 27, 2018)
-Coloradans Against Auto Theft (CAAT), along with the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force (C-MATT) and the Denver Police Department (DPD) will shed light on Colorado's growing auto theft problem and the link between auto theft and other crimes by displaying a unique concept car around downtown Denver during the months of March and April.
Dubbed the "
Kilo Car
," the full-sized vehicle frame is constructed of materials that look to be different types of drugs, representing the shocking truth that auto theft is a tool to commit additional crimes and a safety concern for the whole community. The Kilo Car will be on display outside of the Colorado Convention Center March 1-6, and exhibited at the Denver Auto Show April 4-8.
On Thursday, March 1, CAAT, C-MATT and DPD will host a press conference next to the Kilo Car outside of the Colorado Convention Center to kick off this phase of their 2018 auto theft prevention campaign. During the press conference, speakers will discuss the significance behind the Kilo Car and educate attendees on Colorado auto theft trends and prevention tips.

Representatives from CAAT, C-MATT and DPD will discuss the significance of the Kilo Car, Colorado's growing auto theft problem and auto theft prevention tips during a brief press conference.

The press conference will take place next to the Kilo Car, located in the parking lot adjacent to the Colorado Convention Center at 14th Street & Stout Street.
Why:
Colorado has one of the highest auto theft rates in the nation, with an average of 53 cars stolen every day. What's more, 97 percent of car thieves are charged with additional crimes, such as armed robbery, identity theft, home invasion and drug crimes. CAAT, DPD and CMATT created the Kilo Car to educate Coloradans about the importance of simply locking their car to deter auto thieves.

About Coloradans Against Auto Theft (CAAT):
CAAT is a statewide auto theft prevention initiative to raise awareness about the problem and educate the public on what they can do to reduce their chances of falling victim to auto theft. CAAT is a coalition of law enforcement agencies, the Colorado State Patrol, the Colorado Auto Theft Investigators (CATI), insurance partners, LoJack and AAA Colorado. Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA) is a state authority that was established by Colorado statute in 2003 to help reduce Colorado's serious auto theft problem through the award of grant funds. The Colorado law helps ensure that auto theft prevention efforts are targeted. These efforts have resulted in an increase in stolen vehicle recoveries and criminal prosecutions of hardcore and major organized criminal groups, as well as related crimes.
About CATPA Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force (C-MATT):
The C-MATT is also a multi-jurisdictional auto theft taskforce. The C-MATT includes investigators from Denver, Lakewood, Aurora, Adams County, Arapahoe County, Jefferson County, Colorado State Patrol and Wheat Ridge Police Departments, and District Attorney Offices from Jefferson County, Adams County, Arapahoe County and Denver. Their mission is to investigate auto theft-related crimes and prevent auto theft through innovative investigative techniques, agency collaboration, data collection, information-sharing, community involvement/education and cooperative prosecutorial partnerships.
